PIAA basketball

Two more local teams qualified for the PIAA basketball playoffs Saturday, the result of outcomes from the WPIAL finals.

The Ringgold boys (14-9) qualified as the fifth-place team in Class 4A when New Castle won the WPIAL title. Ringgold will begin play in the state tournament Friday against District 3 champion Bishop McDevitt (22-3).

The Trinity girls (12-12) are back in the state tournament, qualifying as the fifth-place team from the WPIAL in Class 5A when Chartiers Valley won the district championship. The Hillers play Saturday against WPIAL runner-up Thomas Jefferson (19-7). It will be the third meeting between the Section 1 rivals. TJ won the first meetings, 65-57 and 72-41.

College baseball

Strong pitching led Washington & Jefferson to a sweep of No. 19-ranked La Roche, 4-0 and 4-3, in the season-opening doubleheader Saturday at Ross Memorial Park.

The Presidents’ pitching staff blanked La Roche in 15 of 16 innings.

Junior Ben Marisco tossed six shutout innings in the opener and Clay Martin threw one scorless inning. Mullen Socha provided the only offense W&J would need in the bottom of the first inning with a home run. Evan Hannan had an RBI single in the first to make it 2-0.

W&J overcame an early 3-0 deficit in the second game by scoring four runs in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. The W&J bullpen tossed four scoreless innings. Santino Platt was the winning pitcher.

  • California swept a doubleheader from Ohio Valley, winning apir of one-run games, 3-2 and 2-1, at Wild Things Park.

Women’s lacrosse

Washington & Jefferson opened its season with a 19-9 victory over Allegheny.

W&J was led by Rae LaRochelle, who scored five goals. LaRochelle, who also recorded a game-high 10 shots, scored five-plus goals twice last season.

Men’s lacrosse

Washington & Jefferson was unable to overcome a slow start in an 18-5 home loss to Alfred on Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 at home. The Saxons are 2-0.

Pacing the Presidents’ offense was freshman Alex Strain with two goals. Strain leads W&J with 14 points and 11 goals.

Former Ravens RB Collins charged

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins is out on bond after being charged with drug and gun violations.

Collins was arrested after an early-morning car crash Friday and subsequently cut by the Ravens. The single-car accident occurred near Baltimore’s training complex in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Collins has been charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute and having a handgun in a vehicle. He was released on $7,500 posted bond following an initial bail hearing shortly after midnight Saturday morning.

In the NHL

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and two assists, Mikko Koskinen made 30 saves and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 Saturday.

The Oilers used a three-goal second period to pull away from the Blue Jackets, who had won three of four and are fighting to stay above the wild-card line in the Eastern Conference.

Koskinen improved to 18-15-4 with his fourth career shutout – all this season.

  • Adrian Kempe had a goal and an assist, and the Los Angeles Kings stopped a 10-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
