Fitzpatrick has
lead at Bay Hill
Matt Fitzpatrick managed to avoid bogeys on a Bay Hill course so firm he could barely find any pitch marks on the greens. It led to a 5-under 67 and a one-shot lead over Rory McIlroy going into the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
McIlroy, who has never successfully defended any of his 22 victories worldwide, birdied three of his last four holes for a 66. This will be the third time in five events this year that he plays in the last group.
Fitzpatrick, who has five European Tour victories, was at 9-under 207.
So demanding was Bay Hill that it was the highest 54-hole score to lead this tournament since Ben Crenshaw was at 210 in 1993.
Men’s lacrosse
Junior goalkeeper Noah Coden recorded a season-high 27 saves to lead Washington & Jefferson to an 8-7 overtime victory over Mount Union in non-conference play Saturday.
The outstanding performance by Cohen allowed W&J to overcome a 59-33 shot advantage for the Purple Raiders, which included a 34-13 edge in the second half. Freshman Alex Strain scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
College baseball
California University blanked Ohio Dominican 5-0 Saturday afternoon in a nonconference game in Wilson, N.C.
The win gives Cal (7-1) back-to-back shutout victories for the first time since 2014.
The Vulcans improved to 6-1 this season against teams from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Ohio Dominican falls to 4-6 overall.
Junior starter Nick Riggle tossed eight scoreless innings and matched his career high with six strikeouts. He yielded just four hits and issued two walks. Riggle has made three appearances on the mound this season and holds a 0.95 ERA over 19 innings.
In the NHL
Kevin Labanc scored at 3:21 of overtime, Timo Meier had two goals and the San Jose Sharks beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Saturday to take the Western Conference lead.
Labanc scored his 12th goal off assists from Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl.
- Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, Philipp Grubauer stopped 18 shots for his second shutout of the season and playoff-chasing Colorado beat Buffalo, 3-0.
Mikko Rantanen scored on the power play and Gabriel Bourque added a full-length, empty-net goal for the Avalanche. They were missing captain Gabriel Landeskog with the All-Star forward sidelined four-to-six weeks due to an upper-body injury.
In the NBA
Los Angeles Lakers forward Brandon Ingram will miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a deep venous thrombosis in his right arm.
The Lakers announced their decision on the former No. 2 overall draft pick Saturday.
Ingram has missed the Lakers’ past two games after he reported shoulder pain following a morning shootaround last Monday. Lakers coach Luke Walton said earlier this week that Ingram had pain whenever he attempted to lift his arm.
Harper makes debut
Bryce Harper drew big cheers, a pair of walks and an unusual defense in his spring training debut for the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
Both times the slugger with the biggest contract in baseball came to the plate, the Toronto Blue Jays shifted to a four-man outfield, moved the shortstop on the other side of second base and gave the left-handed hitting Harper a wide-open left side of the infield.
“I’ve never seen that. That’s intense,” Harper said, adding he hopes teams don’t do that to him often. “If they start playing ball like that, it’s definitely different.”
