College wrestling
The wrestling season ended one day earlier than the teams at Washington & Jefferson and Waynesburg wanted it to at the NCAA Division III National Championships in Roanoke, Va., as all five local qualifiers were unable to finish on the medals stand.
Waynesburg junior Ken Burrs and senior Jake Evans both logged wins on Friday, the opening day of the tournament, but did not medal.
W&J’s Hunter Neely had a pair of victories to lead the Presidents’ qualifiers, which also included Michael Heinl and Jared Walker.
Evans, the defending national champion at heavyweight, won his opening bout by 8-0 major decision but lost a wild 12-11 decision to Otterbein’s Drew Kasper in the second round. A 4-2 loss in the consolations ended Evans’ stellar career at Waynesburg with 180 career victories.
Burrs lost his opening match by major decision but won 8-6 in overtime in the consolations. In the next round, Burrs lost to the top-seeded wrestler.
Neely, a Bentworth graduate, lost in the preliminary round at 157 but followed that with two victories, 7-6 over Baldwin-Wallace’s Richard Burke and WPI’s Tyler Marsh, 4-3, before being eliminated from competition with a 32-5 record on the season.
Walker went 1-2 at 165 pounds. He dropped a 7-5 decision to the No. 5 seed in his first match but defeated Luther’s Michael Suarez in the consolation round, 8-3. Walker finished the year with a 31-5 record.
Heinl, at 149, lost two bouts but finished the year with a 37 wins, the second-most in W&J history.
College baseball
Behind a season-high 17 hits, the California University defeated Glenville State 11-4 Sunday in Wilson, N.C.
The Vulcans (8-1) extended their winning streak to five games as Glen fell to 0-8.
Louden Conte led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run and double. Jacob McCaskey and Bill Hitman each had three hits.
Winning pitcher Bradyn Kail improved his record to 3-0.
In the NFL
The New York Jets made a big move to get a big man to bolster their offensive line.
Two people with direct knowledge of the trade told the Associated Press that the Jets agreed Sunday to acquire two-time Pro Bowl left guard Kelechi Osemele from the Oakland Raiders. The deal includes the Jets sending their fifth-round draft pick to the Raiders for Oakland’s sixth-rounder.
- The Kansas City Chiefs released veteran linebacker Justin Houston after they were unable to drum up enough trade interest, ending the tenure of one of the best pass rushers in club history.
The Chiefs had made it clear they would trade or release Houston this offseason, primarily because of his cost. He was due $15.25 million and carried a salary cap hit of $21.1 million, numbers that would have made it nearly impossible to make other much-needed upgrades to their defense. The move means the Chiefs will free up $14 million.
In the NHL
Aleksander Barkov reached 30 goals for the first time in his career, helping the Florida Panthers rout the Detroit Red Wings 6-1 on Sunday.
Josh Brown and Dryden Hunt each scored their first NHL goal as Florida earned its second straight win since a costly six-game slide. Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and an assist, and Jamie McGinn and Frank Vatrano also scored.
- Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Colorado Avalanche forward Carl Soderberg.
The suspension will cost Eichel $107,527.
