High school baseball

Casey Burke went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, and Cam Weston doubled, drove in two runs and pitched three innings as defending PIAA champion Canon-McMillan opened its season Friday with a 9-4 victory over Evanston, Ill., in Vero Beach, Fla.

Canon-McMillan took control early, scoring five runs in the second inning and forging an 8-2 lead after three innings.

West and relievers Nick Popielarczyk combined to strike out 12 batters.

Weston, Michael Murano and Brandan Rea each had a double for the Big Macs. Cameron Walker scored two runs.

  • Trinity split two games played at the Coastal Sports Park at Coco Beach, Fla., falling to Alcoa, Tenn., 5-3, and defeating Northgate of the WPIAL, 17-7. Both games lasted six innings.

Against Alcoa, Abrahm King had a two-run double in a three-run third inning. Alcoa had a three-run fourth inning and scored another in the fifth.

Against Northgate, King and Justin Walther each had two-run doubles. Clarence Pomykayla and Forrest Havanis each drove in two runs.

High school softball

Chartiers-Houston began its season Friday with a pair of wins in Myrtle Beach, S.C., defeating Deer Lakes from the WPIAL, 5-2, in the opener and then held off Ridgeview, V.a, 7-6.

Ella Brookman was the winning pitcher in each game, striking out 13 batters over the two contests. She tossed a four-hitter against Deer Lakes and was supported by Lauren Lober and Nicolette Kloes, each of whom belted a triple.

Chartiers-Houston used a pair of three-run innings to build a 6-4 lead after four innings against Ridgeview, then held on the rest of the way.

Lober, Karlyn Bayer and Jaylese Lombardi each went 2-for-3 to lead the Bucs’ 12-hit attack.

  • South Fayette split a pair of games, winning the season opener 8-2 over Deer Lakes in the morning before dropping an afternoon game to Seneca Valley, 8-1, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

No game details were made available.

  • Sydney Senay hit a two-run home run in a three-run sixth inning to propel Canon-McMillan past Fred T. Ford of Newton, N.C., 3-1 in a game played in Hickory, N.C.

Olivia Ulam had an RBI single for C-M. Elika Mowery went 3-for-3 with a triple.

Luke Kunin scored the go-ahead goal with 7:35 left, Devan Dubnyk made 21 saves and the Minnesota Wild moved into playoff position by beating the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Friday night.

In the NBA

Terrence Ross scored 31 points and Evan Fournier had 27, including the game-clinching free throws, and the Orlando Magic rallied to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 123-119 in overtime Friday night.

• Paul George scored 28 points, Russell Westbrook had 18 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Toronto Raptors, 116-109.

Dennis Schroder came off the bench to score 26 points and Jerami Grant had 19 as the Thunder snapped a four-game losing streak and avenged Wednesday’s 123-114 home defeat to Toronto.
