College baseball
California University split a non-conference doubleheader against Lake Erie on Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park, falling 9-4 in Game 1 before posting a 5-3 victory in extra innings in Game 2.
With the split, the No. 25 Vulcans moved to 17-4 overall with a 7-3 mark versus Great Midwest Athletic Conference teams. Meanwhile, the Storm stand at 11-9 this season behind a 3-4 record against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents. The doubleheader was played at Classic Park, which also serves as the home field of the Lake County Captains, the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
In Game 2, the Vulcans entered the top of the seventh trailing 3-2 before freshman catcher Justin Stewart reached base on an error from the shortstop to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt and passed ball moved Stewart to third before senior pinch hitter Thomas Chisam delivered an infield single to tie the game at 3-3.
The contest headed to extra innings and both teams went scoreless in the eighth frame. In the ninth inning, senior center fielder Ben Maudie hit a double with one out before senior second baseman Nico Marchetti smacked an RBI triple to open a 4-3 lead. Senior first baseman Eric Fairman hit a sacrifice fly to center field, as Cal took a 5-3 advantage.
In Game 1, Lake Erie took a 4-3 lead with three runs on six hits. The Storm continued to add runs in the fourth inning on a pair of RBI singles before a hit by pitch with the bases load to increase the advantage to 7-3.
College lacrosse
The Washington & Jefferson men’s lacrosse concluded the nonconference portion of its 2019 schedule with a 16-12 victory over Kalamazoo on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
After picking up the win, the Presidents head into league play with a 5-4 record. The Hornets suffered their first loss of the season, and are now 4-1.
The Presidents took control of the game in the first quarter, storming out to a commanding 7-3 advantage. Alex Strain and Pat Brunner sparked the early surge. Strain scored three goals in the push, while Brunner had two goals and two assists.
- The Washington and Jefferson College women’s lacrosse team closed non-conference play with a 17-5 loss to Frostburg State University Wednesday evening.
The host Bobcats built a 7-1 lead with 3:47 left in the first half before the Presidents countered with a goal each from Alexis Miller and Rae LaRochelle to cut the deficit to four (7-3) at the 2:31 mark. Frostburg State would add a pair of goals to take a 9-3 edge into halftime.
Frostburg State tallied the first four goals of the second half to extend the lead to 13-3 with 26:05 showing on the clock. Sofiya Bobrovnikova and Piper Schinsky recorded a goal each in the second half to conclude the scoring for the Red and Black.
In the NHL
Sean Couturier scored in regulation and provided the only goal in a shootout as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 Wednesday night.
Radko Gudas, Travis Konecny and Ryan Hartman also scored for Philadelphia, which remained mathematically alive for a playoff berth.
Auston Matthews, Connor Brown, Nazem Kadri and William Nylander scored for Toronto.
