Wild Things
add pitcher
The Wild Things have signed right-handed pitcher Tyler Mondile, a former sixth-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds, for the Frontier League season.
The 21-year-old was drafted by the Reds in 2016 out of Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey.
Over three seasons in the minor leagues, Mondile made 31 starts and posted a 5.37 ERA. He struck out 118 in in 154 innings with only 40 walks. Most recently, he pitched for the Dayton Dragons of the Class A Midwest League with car4eer highs of 76 innings pitched and 64 strikeouts.
“Tyler will walk into our clubhouse as the youngest player on our roster but most likely having one of the most talented arms,” said general manager Tony Buccilli. “Being only 21 years old, we see a lot of upside to his game. There’s a natural competitiveness and demeanor to Tyler’s outings that we believe is valuable. Our goal this season is to tap into and refine some of his arm talent and get his starts consistently trending in the right direction.”
The East Division champion Wild Things open the season May 9 at River City. The home opener will be May 17 against Lake Erie.
Schiano resigns from Patriots’ staff
Greg Schiano has stepped down as defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, less than two months after taking the job.
The Patriots, who never announced the hiring of the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Rutgers head coach, confirmed his departure by posting statements from Schiano and coach Bill Belichick on the team’s website.
Schiano said he needs to “spend more time on my faith and family.”
College softball
Waynesburg and Westminster split their Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener Thursday. Westminster won the opener, 4-1, before Waynesburg earned the split with a 4-2 victory in the second game.
Waynesburg broke a 2-2 tie by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tara Staley had a double for the Yellow Jackets and drove in the go-ahead run. Winning pitcher Courtney Messenger allowed only one earned run as Waynesburg improved to 5-13 overall.
In the NHL
Nic Dowd scored on a deflection with 4:56 remaining, and the Washington Capitals clinched a playoff berth with a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.
Brett Connolly and Jakub Vrana scored and Braden Holtby made 24 saves to help the reigning Stanley Cup champions reach the 100-point mark for the fifth straight year and wrap up their 11th spot in the playoffs in 12 seasons.
In the NBA
Joel Embiid had 39 points, 13 rebounds and six assists to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 123-110 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night.
JJ Redick scored 18 points and Ben Simmons had 16 points and eight assists for the 76ers, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Niagara hires Beilein
Niagara University has hired Patrick Beilein to take over its men’s basketball program. The 36-year-old Beilein is the son of Michigan coach John Beilein and his hiring on Thursday follows a similar coaching-career path taken by his father. Patrick Beilein spent the past four years coaching at Division II Le Moyne where he had a 67-24 record before moving to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Patrick Beilein, who played at West Virginia, replaces Chris Casey, who was fired this month after a 13-19 season.
