Nick Senzel hit a leadoff homer after a swarm of bees finally left home plate, and the rookie connected again his next time up Monday, leading Cincinnati to a 12-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
The wild game included a record-tying four Reds getting plunked in one inning. Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval pitched the eighth and also hit a batter.
The first pitch was delayed 18 minutes as bees swarmed above the backstop screen, prompting umpires and players to keep a safe distance before the bees flew away.
It was the Giants’ second bee delay in Cincinnati. Their game at Riverfront Stadium on April 17, 1976, was held up for 35 minutes when bees invaded the visiting dugout. The Reds went on to win 11-0. Another game at Riverfront – this one against the Phillies – was delayed for 17 minutes in 1987, with Reds starter Ted Power getting stung on his hand.
Four Reds were hit by pitches during the sixth inning – two with the bases loaded – to tie the major league record for an inning. Four Boston batters were plunked by Pittsburgh in 1893.
When Sandoval made his second career pitching appearance and plunked Jose Peraza in the eighth inning, it tied the NL record and set a Reds’ modern record of five batters hit in a game.
Braves’ Gausman suspended: Atlanta Braves pitcher Kevin Gausman has been suspended for five games and fined for throwing a 97 mph fastball behind Miami’s Jose Urena last week.
Gausman appealed the penalty imposed Monday by Chief Baseball Office Joe Torre. Gausman can continue to play until there’s a final ruling.
Gausman’s first pitch to Urena in the second inning Friday was knee-high behind the batter, and plate umpire Jeff Nelson immediately signaled the ejection.
Mets acquire Font: The New York Mets have obtained right-hander Wilmer Font from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named or cash.
The 28-year-old was 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA in 10 appearances, striking out 18 in 14 innings.
New York has three relievers on the injured list: Jeurys Familia with shoulder soreness, and Luis Avila?n and Justin Wilson due to elbow soreness.
American League
N.Y. Yankees 7, Seattle 3: The Yankees pounced on Felix Hernandez, building a big cushion for CC Sabathia in a showdown of acclaimed veterans as New York beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3.
Luke Voit, Brett Gardner and Thairo Estrada homered off Hernandez while New York gave Sabathia a 6-0 lead after two innings and held on for its 12th win in 16 games. Hernandez (1-3) settled in after that, completing five innings of seven-run ball.
Domingo Santana and Dee Gordon homered off Sabathia, but the oversized lefty limited Seattle to three runs over five innings. Sabathia (2-1) struck out five in his first start since becoming the 17th pitcher with 3,000 strikeouts last week.
Chicago White Sox 9, Cleveland 1:
Tim Anderson chased Trevor Bauer after the All-Star tweeted a playful message to him earlier in the day, Yoán Moncada had a two-run homer and four RBIs, and the Chicago White Sox routed Cleveland Indians 9-1 to stop a three-game losing streak.
Bauer (4-2) matched career highs by allowing eight runs and seven earned runs in five-plus innings, and his ERA rose from 2.45 to 3.42. He had been 3-0 in his previous four starts. Chicago ended his streak of starts allowing four earned runs or fewer at 60, the second-longest in the major leagues since 1970 behind Greg Maddux’s 106 from 1991-94.
