There will be a new state champion in Class 4A baseball.

Ringgold, the defending state champion, was upset Wednesday in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs by Mt. Pleasant, 8-0, at Seton Hill University.

Mt. Pleasant (10-8), which tied for fourth place in Section 1, scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning and got a six-hitter from starting pitcher Joe Shrum and reliever Jared Wagner.

Three errors by Ringgold (12-6), which shared the Section 3 title with Thomas Jefferson and was seeded No. 5, led to two unearned runs for Mt. Pleasant.

Nick Kolano (2-for-3) was the only Ringgold players with more than one hit.

Beth-Center 4, New Brighton 3: Sophomore Cameron Palmer pitched a five-hit complete game and Beth-Center did its damage early to upset fifth-seeded New Brighton in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs at North Allegheny High School.

Palmer walked only one batter and struck out four as the Bulldogs (8-9) advance to the quarterfinals against fourth-seeded Steel valley, which received a bye in the first round.

Beth-Center scored all its runs in the first three innings and built a 4-2 lead for Palmer.

B-C forged a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on an RBI single by Anthony Dellapenna and a sacrifice fly by Dylan Dingle. After New Brighton (11-7), the Section 2 runner-up, tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, Beth-Center grabbed the lead for good in the second inning. With Dominic Fundy on second base, an errant pickoff throw by New Brighton allowed Fundy to come all the way around to score, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.

B-C pushed the edge to 4-2 in the third when Dingle walked, stole second base, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Drake Zellie bounced into a groundout.

New Brighton scored one run in the fourth but Palmer held the Lions scoreless over the final three innings.

Beaver 5, Belle Vernon 0: Alec Berg and Mason Rose combined on a one-hit shutout as sixth-seeded beaver blanked Belle Vernon 5-0 in a Class 4A first-round game at Fox Chapel.

Beaver (11-7), the Section 2 runner-up, scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and that was all the offense its pitchers needed. The lone hit for Belle Vernon (10-8) was a single by Cole Naylor to lead off the second inning.

St. Joseph 10, Monessen 1: Tyler Wood struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings and St. Joseph scored 10 two-out runs to beat Monessen 10-1 in a Class A first round game at Seton Hill University.

St. Joseph (8-7) scored three runs in each of the first two innings and that was enough offense as Monessen (12-7) was held to four hits, three by Vincenzo Rhome. The Greyhound scored their only runs in the third inning with Rhome getting an RBI.

Dominic Fellowes had three hits and Wood drove in two runs for St. Joseph.

Burrell 10, McGuffey 2: Burrell scored nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to come away with a 10-2 victory over McGuffey in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round playoff game at West Mifflin.

Winning pitcher Luke Virag struck out eight and walked one for Burrell (11-4). He also had two hits and two RBI.

Seth Burgdolt hit a two-run home run for McGuffey (10-6).

Softball

Vincentian Academy 10, Burgettstown 2: Burgettstown had fourth-seeded Vincentian Academy on the ropes before the Royals scored nine runs in the bottom fo the sixth inning for a 10-2 come-from-behind win in a Class 2A first-round contest at Montour.

Burgettstown scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead and carried into into the pivotal half-inning.

The Blue Devils finish the season with an 8-10 record. Vincentian is

Neshannock 10, Bentworth 4: Second-seeded Neshannock scored seven runs in the first two innings and defeated Bentworth 10-4 in a Class 2A first-round game at Sewickley Academy.

Neshannock improved its record to 16-3. The Lancers have won seven in a row.

Bentworth (9-12) scored on a two-run homer by Leah Lindley and a two-run single by Kaylie Anderson.
