Upper St. Clair, Pa.- Second-seeded Serra Catholic (18-2) took care of business in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles beat No. 15 Fort Cherry (9-10) 5-3 at Boyce-Mayview Park.
Serra drew first blood in the bottom half of the first. Junior catcher Mark Black hit a one-out, solo home run to give the Eagles early lead. Fort Cherry answered in its half of the third with an RBI single by senior first baseman Hunter Terpack, which scored senior pitcher Blake McElhaney. Serra regained the lead in the bottom half of that inning, when senior shortstop Pat Brennan, who tripled earlier in the frame, scored on a wild pitch. The favorites added insurance in their next at bat. Freshman centerfielder Eli Kite drove home sophomore designated hitter Dom Demoss with a single to push the lead to two. In the bottom of the fifth, Brennan homered to make it 4-1, and the Eagles added another later in the frame. Fort Cherry threatened with two runs in the seventh, but Brennan got the last out with the bases loaded to preserve the win.
Junior Alex Glumac got the win for Serra, allowing just one unearned run on five hits over five innings. For Fort Cherry, McElhaney took the loss, allowing five earned on six hits over six. The Eagles will take on the winner of the Avonworth-Brownsville game in the WPIAL quarterfinals.
