High school roundup: Trinity softball gets win, sets up rematch

Bailey Bell hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Bayleigh McCullough had a run-scoring single that gave Trinity the lead for good in the third inning and the Hillers went on to a 6-2 victory over Gateway in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A softball playoffs Thursday night at North Allegheny High School.

The victory sends Trinity (14-4) to the quarterfinals Monday against Connellsville (14-6). It will be a rematch of the regular-season finale won by Connellsville, 7-5.

Against Gateway, Bell got the Hillers off to a strong start with her home run, and McCullough’s RBI single in the bottom of the third gave Trinity the lead for good at 2-1.

The Hillers broke open the game in the fifth, when they scored three times. Kylie Poland’s double scored Bell and made it 3-1. Emma Morgan had a run-scoring single and she came around to score on a bunt by McCullough.

Sloan Altman drove in the Hillers’ final run with a single in the sixth inning, extending the lead to 6-1.

Gateway (10-8) took advantage of two Trinity errors in the seventh inning to score a run.

Pitchers Poland and Morgan combined on a seven-hitter.

Baseball

South Fayette 5, Montour 4: Tyler Sharp, the No. 8 hitter in South Fayette’s lineup, belted a two-run, go-ahead homer in the fourth inning and the Lions held off late charge to defeat Montour, 5-4, in a WPIAL Class 5A baseball first-round game at Boyce Matview Park on Thursday.

South Fayette, last year’s WPIAL champion in Class 4A, improves its record to 12-7 and will play second-seeded Franklin Regional next week in the quarterfinals.

Montour (11-10) led 2-1 in the fourth but South Fayette’s Christian gabriel drew a one-out walk and Sharp followed with his two-run homer to left field that gave the Lions a 3-2 lead.

Before the inning would end, Richie Dell would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run and extending South Fayette’s lead to 4-2.

The Lions made it 5-2 in the fifth when a single by Gabriel scored Ryan McGuire. That run proved to be key when Montour score twice in the seventh to make it a one-run game. The Spartans had two on and one out but a groundball double play ended the game.

Dell was the winning pitcher. he struck out 11 over five innings. Joey Alcorn pitched the final two innings for a save.

Shaler 3, Trinity 2: Hunter Boyan’s single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Colton Schott from second base and gave Shaler a 3-2 victory over Trinity in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs at North Allegheny.

The game was as even as you can get from baseball teams. Both teams scored two runs in the sixth inning and it remained deadlocked until the bottom of the ninth.

Schott had a two-out single in the ninth and it was followed by a walk, which brought Boyan, the Titans’ leadoff hitter to plate.

Trinity (10-11) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Michael Parrish ripped a double to left field to score Brent Kurtz. parrish scored on a single by jax Banco, who had outstanding game in the outfield, throwing out two Shaler runners at second base.

Shaler (12-7) tied the score in the bottom of the sixth, getting an RBI single by Collin Harger, who went 3-for-4, and a run-scoring double from Nick Rispoli.

Boyan pitched a complete game for Shaler, allowing six hits and one walk. He struck out five.

Camden Zaken started on the mound for Trinity and went seven innings. He allowed seven hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts. Forrest Havanis pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.

Laurel 16, Chartiers-Houston 6: Laurel scored 13 runs over the first two innings and defeated Chartiers-Houston 16-6 in a Class 2A first-round game at the Burkett Complex.

After falling behind 13-0, Chartiers-Houston (13-5) scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Each team’s pitching settled in after the rocky start as neither club scored again until the sixth inning.
