Two Pitt football
games to air on ESPN
Two Pitt football games have already been earmarked for national ESPN telecasts, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Thursday.
The Panthers’ Oct. 18 contest at Syracuse will be the network’s featured Friday game and kick off at 7 p.m.

In the majors
Christian Yelich hit his major league-leading 17th and 18th homers to help Zach Davies and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-3 Thursday.
Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas also went deep as the Brewers won their third in a row after losing the series opener against the NL East-leading Phillies.
Davies (5-0) allowed three runs – one earned – and four hits in six innings. He pitched out of trouble often because of four errors behind him.
- Gerardo Parra hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth and Sean Doolittle stopped the New York Mets’ ninth-inning rally by striking out Keon Broxton with the bases loaded, giving the Washington Nationals a 7-6 win.
- Rougned Odor homered twice, Willie Calhoun went deep for the second straight day and the Texas Rangers hit five homers in all as they routed the Kansas City Royals 16-1 in the rubber game of their three-game set.
Joey Gallo went deep among his four hits, and Hunter Pence also homered, making life so tough on the Royals’ pitching staff that manager Ned Yost resorted to using utility man Chris Owings on the mound the last two innings.
- Jurickson Profar hit his first career grand slam and the Oakland Athletics routed Detroit 17-3 for their 13th straight victory over the Tigers.
Josh Phegley had four hits, including one of Oakland’s five home runs, as the A’s won their ninth in a row at Comerica Park.
In golf
Rachel Rohanna of Waynesburg shot an even-par round of 72 Thursday and is tied for 36th place in the Symetra Classic in Davdison, N.C.
Rohanna had a round that included four birdies and four bogeys. She is at 3-over for the tournament and trails four quad-leaders by eight strokes.
The tournament concludes with the final round today.
Cards’ Peterson suspended 6 games
Arizona Cardinals All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson has been suspended for the first six games of the 2019 season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
The NFL did not specify Thursday which illegal substance Peterson allegedly used.
Peterson can participate in all offseason workouts and preseason games. He will be eligible to return Oct. 14, before Arizona’s game against the New York Giants.
“Patrick recognizes how disappointing this is for everyone in the organization as well as our fans,” the Cardinals said in a statement. “As we all do, he understands that regardless of intent he is ultimately responsible for everything he puts in his body. Our coaching staff and our players are now aware that we will have to play the first six games without Patrick and they understand they have to rise to the challenge that it presents.”
Peterson is still one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks at 28. The fifth overall pick of the 2011 draft, he has 23 career interceptions despite teams rarely testing him.
Peterson is a three-time All-Pro and he holds the franchise record with eight Pro Bowl appearances, a streak that will come to an end with his suspension. Under league rules, no player who was suspended for violation of PED policy can play in the Pro Bowl.
