Pitt football gets graduate transfer

Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi announced Wednesday the addition of linebacker Kylan Johnson, a graduate transfer from the University of Florida.

A three-year letterman for the Gators, Johnson will have one season of eligibility remaining.

Over three seasons at Florida, Johnson played in 33 games and made nine starts. He compiled career totals of 83 tackles and one sack.

“Kylan is a really smart player with a great nose for the football,” Narduzzi said. “He can play either outside linebacker position and is a great fit for our scheme. Kylan’s experience and athleticism will be immediate assets for our linebacker group.”

The addition of Johnson helps fortify Pitt’s linebacker position, which returns starter junior Elias Reynolds in the middle and seven lettermen.

Pony baseball

Washington Hyundai held on for a 5-4 win over Printscape on Wednesday in the Washington Pony League.

On the mound, David Lutes got the win, striking out eight batters. For Printscape, Shane Montgomery took the loss in the low-scoring game. Printscape’s Matthew Smith had the only extra-base hit of the game with a double.

World Cup field set

at 32 teams

FIFA scrapped plans to expand the 2022 Qatar World Cup to 48 nations, deciding Wednesday to stick with 32 countries due to the political and logistical complexities of using another Persian Gulf nation.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s hopes of expanding the Middle East’s first World Cup in the region were stymied by the regional diplomatic crisis and the governing body’s demands on host nations to adhere to its human and labor rights requirements. That means the World Cup will not be expanded until 2026, with FIFA already having approved a format with 48 teams for that tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A meeting of the FIFA Council in March authorized Infantino to work with Qatar on seeing if it was feasible to use at least one more country in the region to accommodate an additional 16 matches and present a proposal at meetings in June.

Cleveland gets

NFL Draft

NFL owners gave the competition committee the go-ahead Wednesday to decide whether to refine the new rule allowing replay challenges involving pass interference.

The proposed tweak would take the decision on whether to review in the final two minutes of each half out of the hands of the officials. Reviews in the final two minutes would instead require a coach’s challenge.

Owners voted to hold the NFL draft in Cleveland in 2021, the 75th anniversary of the Browns, and in Kansas City in 2023. The league said it delayed choosing a site for 2022 because about 20 cities are interested in hosting that year.

Regarding pass interference, the league fears too many stoppages of play in the closing minutes if those reviews are left up to the officials. A decision on whether to require a coach’s challenge in the final two minutes will come after the competition committee consults with coaches next month.

WVU baseball wins

Brandon White and Paul McIntosh each knocked in four runs and West Virginia beat fifth-seeded Kansas 12-8 on Wednesday in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday.

Ivan Gonzalez and Marques Inman had two RBIs apiece for the Mountaineers (35-18), which finished with 17 hits.

West Virginia chased Kansas starter Nathan Barry (5-1) after just one inning and jumped ahead 9-1 after just three innings. The Jayhawks (31-25) pulled to within 10-8 before a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh pushed the Mountaineers’ lead to four runs.

Nick Snyder allowed seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings for West Virginia, and Gabe Kurtzhals (2-0) got the win after pitching a scoreless inning in relief.

Nolan Metcalf had three hits for Kansas, which used seven pitchers.
