PAC cross country
Waynesburg University won its fourth-straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s cross country title Saturday afternoon.
The conference’s 36th annual, six-kilometer championship race was hosted by Westminster College.
Waynesburg’s five scoring runners each finished in the top 13 of the nine-team, 113-runner field. The Yellow Jackets totaled 36 points. Geneva was the runner-up with 40 points. Grove City College was third. Washington & Jefferson placed seventh.
Waynesburg sophomore Aubrey Wingeart earned the event’s individual title and PAC Runner of the Year honors after posting a winning time of 22:51.60. She finished third in 2018.
Geneva sophomore Elly McGillivray was the runner-up.
Waynesburg’s 10th-year head coach Chris Hardie was voted the league’s Coach of the Year for the fifth time in the last six years.
Saint Vincent ran away with the men’s team title, the eighth in school history. W&J, last year’s champion, was the runner-up and Waynesburg was third.
W&J freshman Paul Collier was named the PAC Newcomer of the Year. He finished sixth with a time of 27:28.94.
Men’s soccer
California University freshman Eli Mitchell scored two goals in the second half Saturday, giving the Vulcans a 2-1 victory at Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC West match.
Cal improves to 4-6-3 overall and 2-3-3 mark in the division.
In the NHL
Nashville had some chances, but Alexandar Georgiev stood tall.
Georgiev made 32 saves to lead the New York Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday.
Filip Chytil and Ryan Strome scored for the Rangers, who have won three of four. Viktor Arvidsson had the lone goal for Nashville, which has lost two straight.
In the NBA
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 23 points and eight rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the New Orleans Pelicans 115-104 on Saturday.
Dennis Schroder and rookie Darius Bazley each added 17 points for the Thunder. Danilo Gallinari scored 16 points and Chris Paul finished with 15 points and nine assists.
In tennis
Top-ranked Ash Barty advanced Saturday to the final of the WTA Finals in China where she faces defending champion Elina Svitolina, a player she has never beaten in five previous attempts.
Barty, like Svitolina, dropped the opening set before beating second-ranked Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Belinda Bencic retired in the third set as Svitolina outlasted the injured Swiss to win 5-7, 6-3.
