Wild Things sign blast from past
The Wild Things announced Tuesday that they have re-signed center fielder Rashad Brown, who last played for the team in 2017.
After playing five seasons in the Detroit Tigers’ farm system, Brown joined the Wild Things in 2017 and made an immediate impact as a leadoff hitter and solid defensive outfielder. The speedster stole 29 bases and helped Washington’s return to the Frontier League playoffs.
The Atlanta native was a staple at the top of the lineup, hitting .275 with 15 doubles, six triples and driving a career-high 33 runs. Brown earned some hardware along the way, being selected as a starting outfielder in the all-star game and winning the Fran Riordan Award for citizenship.
“We view Rashad as the best defensive outfielder in franchise history,” general manager Tony Buccilli said. “What he is able to do with his speed, saving runs and pressuring defenses, is something special. He has taken the past few years off to pursue other endeavors but has remained around the game and is highly motivated. We are excited to see what 2020 has in store for the fan favorite.”
Waynesburg women fall to Hiram
Alainna Conroy and Tashauna Wright combined for 51 points to help Hiram down Waynesburg 86-68 in a nonconference game.
The game started nearly an hour late because Hiram had travel difficulties.
Hiram evened its record at 1-1 while Waynesburg slipped to 0-2.
Conroy scored a game-high 35 and Wright added 16 for Hiram. Conroy sank 13 of 22 shots, including 7 of 12 from three-point range.
Brooke Fuller had a double-double for the Yellow Jackets, scoring 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Leighton Croft tossed in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Players honored
After averaging 5.29 digs per set in two matches, California University junior libero Jensen Silbaugh was named the Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Silbaugh controlled the defensive effort with 37 total digs, as the Vulcans posted a 1-1 record in PSAC Crossover action over the weekend. She paced the team with 20 digs and tallied three blocks, three kills and two aces against Clarion on Friday night. Silbaugh did not serve as the libero for the first time this year in the initial two sets of the match versus the Golden Eagles. She tied for the team lead with 17 digs and added two service aces in a 3-0 sweep against Slippery Rock on Saturday.
A native of Ohio, Silbaugh now ranks fifth all-time in school history with 1,466 digs after passing Molly Delaney (2010-13).
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference released its annual All-PAC women’s volleyball teams and conference award winners Tuesday afternoon. Waynesburg junior outside hitter Hannah Colvin was recognized as All-PAC Honorable Mention, and senior setter Alyssa Proper was the Yellow Jackets’ representative on the PAC Sportsmanship Team.
Colvin paced the Yellow Jackets in kills (235), kills per set (2.73) and total attacks (814). She also finished second on the team in digs (286) and digs per set (3.33), as well as fourth on the team in service aces (29).
Washington & Jefferson College seniors Makenzie Coughlin and Mallory O’Brien finished their collegiate careers by earning selection to the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference Volleyball Teams.
The league announced the annual All-PAC teams, as well as the major award winners and Sportsmanship Team representatives on Tuesday. Coughlin received First Team laurels while O’Brien picked up Honorable Mentions status.
Coughlin secured First Team honors after statistically ranking as one of the top defensive players in all of Division III volleyball.
