Zach Werenski scored 3:34 into overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues Friday.

With the Blue Jackets on a 4-on-3 power play, Werenski buried a shot from the right circle. He has a goal in three straight games.

• Filip Chlapik scored in the second period, Anders Nilsson made 26 saves and the Ottawa Senators killed off a late four-minute power play to beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 2-1.

Ottawa’s Colin White took a double minor for high-sticking Claude Giroux with just over four minutes remaining in the game. The Flyers pulled Carter Hart for a two-man advantage, but were unable to get the equalizer.

• Brad Marchand scored two goals in the third period and the Boston Bruins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-2.

Charlie Coyle had a goal and an assist, and Zdeno Chara added a score for Boston (12-3-4). Tuukka Rask made 29 stops for the Bruins, who snapped a 0-2-2 slide.

• By the time Capitals coach Todd Reirden called a timeout to tell his team to wake up, it was too late.

Alex Ovechkin’s thunderous hit on Jonathan Drouin had already energized the Canadiens.

Montreal scored four goals in the second period following Ovechkin’s hit and went on to beat Washington 5-2, ending the NHL-leading Capitals’ 13-game point streak. Drouin returned for the third period, and the Canadiens won their third in a row.

In the NBA

Things haven’t always gone the way Malik Monk hoped during his first two seasons with the Charlotte Hornets.

But coach James Borrego said the third-year shooting guard never stopped working – and now he’s starting to see some big results.

Monk knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Charlotte Hornets a 109-106 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night, helping snap a four-game losing streak.

Evan Fournier scored 26 points, including a couple of late 3-pointers, and the Orlando Magic beat San Antonio 111-109 on Friday night to hand the Spurs their fourth straight defeat.

Terrence Ross had 10 of his season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter for Orlando.

• Bill Russell finally accepted his Basketball Hall of Fame ring.

The 11-time NBA champion, five-time MVP, Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champ said on Twitter on Friday that he was presented with his Hall of Fame ring in a private ceremony.

The 85-year-old Boston Celtics great didn’t attend the induction ceremony in 1975. He said he didn’t deserve to be the first black player inducted, tweeting: “I felt others before me should have that honor.”

His tweet mentions Chuck Cooper, who in 1950 was the first African-American player drafted by the NBA and who was inducted this year.

Russell said the ceremony was attended by his wife, along with close friends and Hall of Famers Bill Walton, Ann Meyers and Alonzo Mourning.

In college basketball

Tre Jones scored a career-high 31 points and No. 2 Duke pulled away to beat pesky Georgia State 74-63 on Friday night.

Freshman Vernon Carey Jr. added season highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds and Jack White finished with 10 rebounds.

Duke (4-0) overcame season-worst 34.2% shooting by outrebounding the Panthers 58-32, and the school says its 30 offensive rebounds were the most in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 40 seasons.

Isaiah Moss poured in 21 points to lead six Jayhawks in double-figures scoring, and No. 5 Kansas romped to a 112-57 victory over undersized and outclassed Monmouth.

Moss, who missed the season opener against Duke because of an injury, was 5 of 6 from beyond the arc as the Jayhawks (2-1) ran their home winning streak to 23 straight games.

The streak is the third-longest in the nation behind only Tennessee (28) and Gonzaga (25).
