Men’s basketball
Four different players for Washington & Jefferson scored in double figures but Buffalo State handed the Presidents their first loss of the season, 78-71, in the Buffalo State Coles Classic.
Trailing by 10 points during the first half, W&J (3-1) came back to take the lead after on a layup from Okikiola Agbale less than one minute into the second half.
A seven-point run midway through the second half put Buffalo State (2-1) in control.
Sheldon Adams scored 31 points for the Bengals to lead all scorers.
Primo Zini led the Presidents with 13 points. Agbale had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron Seemann and Jonathan DeVito also were in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
- • Keeno Holmes made five three-pointers en route to a team-high 22 points as Allegheny defeated Waynesburg, 82-62, in the Greg Richard Memorial Classic at Allegheny College.
Waynesburg (0-2) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead that quickly went away on a 13-0 run by the Gators midway through the first half.
The Yellow Jackets were pace by a game-high 32 points from Brennan Smith. Smith went 11-for-16 from the floor and made seven of his nine free throws. Matt Popeck added 13 points for Waynesburg.
Jordan Rawls scored 18 points for Allegheny (3-0), which led 39-25 at halftime.
Women’s basketball
Alie Seto scored a game-high 19 points as Washington & Jefferson shook off a tough third quarter and held off Carnegie Mellon, 60-55, in the championship game Springhill Suites Tip-Off Tournament at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
W&J (3-0) led by 11 points at halftime, 33-22, but that advantage was trimmed to just three points after the Presidents only managed to score seven points in the third quarter.
Carnegie Mellon (0-3) tied the game at 47-47 on a pair free throws from Cameron Pitts with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter.
The Presidents made six free throws in the final 5:07 to clinch the victory. They went 15-for-19 from the line.
Lauren Gilbert had 15 points and Morningstar added 11.
The Tartans failed to make a three-pointer (0-for-15).
Men’s soccer
An early goal was all that No. 7 John Carroll needed in a 2-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
Stephen Schutt scored less that five minutes into the match for John Carroll (18-2-2). The lead was doubled in the 51st minute on a goal from Chase Fernkorn.
W&J (12-8-2) only managed three shots, all in the second half.
College wrestling
Michael Heinl and Jared Walker both earned two wins as the Washington & Jefferson wrestling team had a pair of victories at the Waynesburg Quad.
W&J won by forfeit over Fairmont State and also defeated Johns Hopkins, 30-18. The Presidents lost to Messiah, 28-25.
Heinl won by major decision over Ike Bryner of Messiah and by pinfall against Johns Hopkins’ Jared Osborne. Walker, a South Fayette graduate, won by major decision against Messiah’s Kevin Edwards and a 6-3 decision against Dominick Reyes of Johns Hopkins.
Bentworth graduate Manny Dovshek and South Fayette’s Jake Walker also earned victories for the Presidents.
