Former Cal baseball coach Gismondi dies
Former Califormia University baseball coach and professor Charles Angelo “Buck” Gismondi, 77, of Elco, died Saturday.
He became the Vulcans’ head baseball coach in 1980 and compiled 393 victories in 17 seasons.
Gismondi teams posted 14 winning seasons and made six post-season appearances. He produced eight professional baseball players at California.
Pitt-BC kickoff set
Pitt’s Nov. 30 football game against Boston College, the Panthers’ final home contest of the season, will kick off at 3:30 p.m., it was announced Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The game will be nationally televised by ESPN, ESPN2 or the ACC Network. Television coverage will be determined following the games of Nov. 23.
Palone nears milestone
Dave Palone drove a single winner Monday at The Meadows to lift his career total to 18,998. He’ll have plenty of chances to reach the 19,000 milestone Tuesday, with 12 assignments scheduled on the 13-race card.
Nearly lost in the excitement over Palone’s quest was the big day achieved by Jim Pantaleano, who had five wins on the program.
