None of Devin Hefner’s game-high 22 points were more crucial than the final two.
Hefner sunk a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds left in regulation to lift Marietta over visiting Washington & Jefferson, 59-57, in a nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday night.
It was the first loss of the season for W&J (3-1).
Five seconds before Hefner went to the line for the game-winning points, the Presidents tied the game at 57-57 when Lauren Gilbert made all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point shot.
Gilbert was one of three players in double figures for W&J with 11 points. Maria Lawhorne led the Presidents with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Allie Seto also scored 10 points.
The two teams were tied at halftime, 25-25. Marietta (1-2) trailed by two points, 39-37, entering the fourth quarter.
Men’s result
Washington & Jefferson 73, Kenyon 55: Scoring 49 points by shooting 64% from the field in the second half, Washington & Jefferson pulled away from Kenyon, 73-55, in a nonconference game at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Cameron Seemann led W&J (4-1) with 18 points. Primo Zini scored 16 and Jacob Davenport added 15 points. Davenport was 4-for-4 from behind the three-point line and made all three of his foul shots.
The Presidents led 24-22 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.
Kenyon (1-2) was paced by 17 points from Elijah Davis. Ugnius Zilinskas also had 14 points for the Lords.
