None of Devin Hefner’s game-high 22 points were more crucial than the final two.

Hefner sunk a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds left in regulation to lift Marietta over visiting Washington & Jefferson, 59-57, in a nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday night.

It was the first loss of the season for W&J (3-1).

Five seconds before Hefner went to the line for the game-winning points, the Presidents tied the game at 57-57 when Lauren Gilbert made all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point shot.

Gilbert was one of three players in double figures for W&J with 11 points. Maria Lawhorne led the Presidents with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Allie Seto also scored 10 points.

The two teams were tied at halftime, 25-25. Marietta (1-2) trailed by two points, 39-37, entering the fourth quarter.
