McKinley Whipkey ran for 174 yards and four touchdowns and caught a long TD pass, and Marshall Whipkey passed for two scores and ran 80 yards for another TD as undefeated McGuffey pulled away late for a 48-22 win over Brownsville in the Class 2A Interstate Conference on Friday night.

McGuffey (5-0, 7-0) remained atop the conference standings but was challenged by Brownsville (1-3, 2-5). The Falcons trailed by only 22-16 early in the second half and 29-22 late in the third quarter. However, McKinley Whipkey’s TD runs of two and 47 yards pushed McGuffey’s lead to 41-22 in the fourth quarter.

The Highlanders sealed the win when Nate Yagle caught an 80-yard TD pass from Marshall Whipkey, who completed seven of 11 for 189 yards and rushed for 113 yards on nine carries.

Brownsville’s Timmy Bannasch ran for a game-high 282 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Burgettstown 47, Carlynton 0

Jake Lounder and Dylan Poirier each scored twice to pace undefeated Burgettstown to a 47-0 victory over Carlynton in a Class 2A Three Rivers Conference game.

Lounder scored on runs of 3 and 39 yards and hit Poirier on scoring tosses of 10 and 45 yards for the Blue Devils ((5-0, 6-0). Seth Phillis kicked field goals of 32 and 28 yards. Lounder completed 6 of 9 passes for 121 yards and rushed for 57 yards on 7 carries. Shane Kemper had a team-high 66 rushing yard and a TD.

Carlynton fell to 1-3 and 2-5.

Belle Vernon 48, Trinity 7

Larry Callaway scored three times to pace Belle Vernon to a 48-7 victory over Trinity in a Class 4A Big Eight Conference game at Hiller Field.

Callaway scored on runs of 9, 2 and 55 yards for BV (4-1, 5-1) and gained 154 yards. Jared Hartman completed 11 of 14 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown and he scored on a 1-yard run.

Drew Cain caught a 55-yard pass from Tysean Lacks for Trinity (2-4, 2-4). Micah Finley rushed 31 times for 127 yards.

Charleroi 28, Southmoreland 7

Brayden Mihalcin ran for two touchdowns, Alex Conrad threw for a score, ran for another and had a key interception, and Charleroi scored 28 unanswered points to defeat Southmoreland 28-7 in an Interstate Conference game.

The win was the fifth in a row for Charleroi (4-1, 5-1) after a season-opening loss to Washington.

The Cougars had to come from behind as Southmoreland (4-2, 5-2), which has lost two in a row, took a 7-0 lead when Morgan Basinger intercepted a Conrad pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. After that, it was all Charleroi.

Conrad threw a 24-yard TD pass to Legend Davis down the right sideline to make it 7-7 at halftime.

Mihalcin had a 10-yard run in the third quarter thta gave Charleroi the lead. After Conrad intercepted a pass in Southmoreland territory, he ended the ensuing drive with a one-yard QB sneak to make it 21-7.

Mihalcin capped the scoring with a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter.

Chartiers-Houston 21, Monessen 19

Anthony Lento threw two touchdown passes to Tyler Blumen and Chartiers-Houston held off Monessen, 21-19, in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

The pair connected on a 15-yarder in the second quarter and 41 yards in the third for the Bucs (4-1, 5-2). Jimmy Sadler scored on a 2-yard run to open the scoring.

Monessen (2-3, 2-5) got to within two points in the fourth quarter after returning a fumble 21 yards for a TD.

Bentworth 31, Avella 20

Trent Cavanaugh scored three touchdowns and had 229 total yards in Bentworth’s 31-20 victory over Avella in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

Cavanaugh rushed for 144 yard on 17 carries and caught 3 passes for 88 yards. Bentworth’s defense produced seven turnovers, six fumbles and an interception. The Bearcats (2-3, 2-5) also recovered an onside kick.

Matt Kidwell, Noah Markle and Derek Tarolli scored for Avella (0-4, 1-6). Anthony Georgetti had 89 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Greensburg CC 47, Mapletown 27

Greensburg Central Catholic scored 28 first-quarter points and cruised to a 47-27 non-conference win over Mapletown on Friday night.

Ben LaCarte returned an interception 38 yards for a score only 24 seconds into the game and GCC (6-1) had a kickoff return for a TD in the fourth quarter.

GCC led 28-0 at halftime and 34-0 in the third quarter before Mapletown (1-6) scored four touchdowns in a little more than 14 minutes. Mapletown’s Max Vanata threw TD passes of 13 yards to Clay Menear and 55 yards to Landan Stevenson, and Stevenson ran for scores of five and 55 yards. Stevenson finished with 161 rushing yards on 25 carries and Cohen Stout had 101 on 14 attempts. Vanata was 11 of 22 for 138 yards.

Neshannock 35, Fort Cherry 0

Brayden Genoch rushed for 166 yards and score two touchdowns as Neshannock shut out Fort Cherry 35-0 in a non-section game.

Jason Nativio passed for two touchdowns and ran for another for the Lancers (5-2),

Outside linebacker Chase Belsterling had an interception for Fort Cherry (0-7).

Pine-Richland 63, Canon-McMillan 7

Cole Spencer threw for four touchdowns and ran for another during Pine-Richland’s 63-7 pounding of Canon-McMillan in a Class 6A Quad County Conference game.

D’Avay Johnson caught a touchdown and returned an interception for a score for Pine-Richland (4-1, 6-1).

Ben Urso replaced the injured Jonathan Quinque at quartetrback and completed 11 of 21 passes for 128 yards and a TD toss to Blake Joseph, who caught 6 passes for 67 yards for the Big Macs (1-4, 1-6).

Quaker Valley 28, Waynesburg 13

Patrick Cutchember scored two touchdown passes and Quaker Valley recovered a blocked punt for a score as the Quakers picked up their first win of the season Friday night, 28-13 over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Tri-County West Conference game.

Donovan Cutchember gave Quaker Valley (1-4, 1-5) a 12-6 lead in the second quarter when he ran 31 yards for a touchdown. It started a run of 22 unanswered points by the Quakers.

Darnell Johnson had a 25-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Trevor Stephenson had an 85-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter for Waynesburg’s scores. The Raiders fell to 0-5 in the conference and 2-5 overall.
