Galchenyuk placed on IR

The Pittsburgh Penguins placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on injured reserve after he aggravated an undisclosed injury that limited him during the preseason.

Galchenyuk joins center Evgeni Malkin and forward Bryan Rust and Nick Bjugstad on IR for the Penguins, who are off to a 1-2-0 start. Galchenyuk, acquired in an offseason trade with Arizona, has two assists in three games.

Pittsburgh forward Patric Hornqvist sat out practice on Wednesday. Hornqvist left a 4-1 loss to Winnipeg on Tuesday night after getting hit by a shot off the stick of teammate Kris Letang.

The Penguins recalled forward Adam Johnson from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Burfict’s suspension upheld

Oakland Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict’s appeal to overturn his suspension for the rest of the season for a helmet-to-helmet hit has been denied.

Appeals officer Derrick Brooks ruled Wednesday that he would not reduce the longest suspension ever handed down for an on-field infraction. Brooks is appointed jointly by the NFL and the NFLPA and heard Burfict’s appeal of the ban for the final 12 games of the regular season and the playoffs.

He upheld the decision handed down last week by NFL Vice President of football operations Jon Runyan to punish Burfict severely for the hit on Indianapolis tight end Jack Doyle on Sept. 29.

Girls soccer

Jocelyn Timlin sent the match into overtime with a late marker and ended it with a golden goal as Bentworth edged Chartiers-Houston, 3-2, to clinch at least a share of the Section 2-A title.

Chartiers-Houston (8-2-0, 10-6-0) scored with 5:45 left in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, Timlin answered with the equalizer.

Timline had all three goals for Bentworth (10-0-0, 13-1-0), which clinched its third section title in the last four seasons. Paige Marshalek had three assists for the Bearcats.

  • • Bella Vozar scored in overtime as Thomas Jefferson upended Trinity, 4-3, in a Section 3-AAA match.

Trinity (5-5-1, 6-6-1) was nearing a victory in regulation until Thomas Jefferson’s Dalaney Ranallo scored with less than one minute left in the second half to tie the match at 3-3.

Alyssa Clutter scored twice for the Hillers. Courtney Dahlquist also had a goal.

The win keeps Thomas Jefferson (7-4-0, 9-5-1) in third place in the section standings.

  • Hannah Stuck and Jillian Marvin both had hat tricks as Peters Township routed Baldwin, 13-0, in a Class 4A Section 2 match.

Stuck and Marvin each recorded two assists, also.

It was the fourth consecutive win for Peters Township (11-1-1, 14-1-1).

Baldwin falls to 3-10-0 in the section and 3-10-1 overall.

  • Rachel Black scored her fourth goal with 1:05 remaining in regulation to break a tied score as South Fayette won a crucial Section 4-AAA match over Central Valley, 5-4.

The win ends a three-game losing skid for South Fayette (6-5, 8-6) and moves it into fourth place in the section standings. The Lions entered the match tied with Central Valley (5-6, 8-6) with the same section record.

Black’s late goal stopped a furious, second-half rally from the Warriors, who scored three goals all with under 14 minutes remaining to tie the match at 4-4.

  • Jordan Sekora had a hat trick as McGuffey defeated Charleroi, 5-1, in a Section 2-A match.

Sensi Yendell and Cameron Moore also scored for the Highlanders, who improve to 8-3 in the section and 9-6 overall.

Bella Skobel scored the lone goal for Charleroi (3-8, 3-10).

  • Lexi Twaddle, Sara Tonkovich and Angelina Hofrichter all scored for Canon-McMillan as the Big Macs defeated visiting Mt. Lebanon, 3-1, in a Class 4A Section 2 match.

Canon-McMillan (7-5-0, 10-5-0) can solidify its playoff positioning with a victory today over winless Brashear.

Kendall Donati scored for Mt. Lebanon (3-10-0, 3-13-0).

Men’s soccer

Joseph Valeriano made a career-high nine saves as California University played Mercyhurst to a 2-2 draw in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division match.

The performance by Valeriano helped Cal (1-1-2, 2-4-2) snap a three-match losing streak against the Lakers.

Abdulla Nuredini and Eli Mitchell scored for the Vulcans, who held off overtime pressure from Mercyhurst (2-0-1, 4-2-2) to preserve the draw.

Women’s soccer

Despite take a 1-0 lead, California allowed four unanswered goals to Mercyhurst and fell 4-1 in a PSAC West Division match.

Juliana Cruz gave Cal (2-6-0, 3-6-0) the one-goal lead in the 22nd minute when she took a pass from Rebecca Lyxell and scored.

That lead quickly disappeared as Mercyhurst (5-3-0, 6-3-1) scored a pair of goals before halftime.
