High school football
Two first-half touchdowns for Shady Side Academy was too much to overcome as the Indians toppled Fort Cherry, 21-6, in a Saturday afternoon non-conference game.
Shady Side’s Josh Castro threw a touchdown to Mason Tomlin for the first score. Eddie Faulkner then had a short rushing score to extend the lead to 14-0.
Jake Tkach got Fort Cherry (0-8) on the scoreboard when he found Dylan Rogers for a 16-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Tkach also had 15 carries for 75 yards.
Shady Side improves to 5-2 overall.
Girls soccer
Abby Hipkins made seven saves to preserve a shutout victory as Canon-McMillan defeated Belle Vernon, 4-0, in a non-section match.
The clean sheet for Hipkins was then supported by goal scorers Annabel Thomas, Lexi Twaddle and Emily Gross. Thomas had a pair of markers for Canon-McMillan (8-5, 12-5), which has won its last three matches.
The loss snapped a six-match winning streak for Belle Vernon (12-3). It was the first time all season the Leopards were held scoreless.
Grace Henderson made 10 saves for Belle Vernon.
- A first-half goal from Isabelle Vozar was enough to lift Thomas Jefferson over South Fayette, 1-0, in a non-section match.
It was the fourth loss in the last five matches for South Fayette (8-7-0).
Thomas Jefferson (10-5-1) has rebounded from two consecutive losses with back-to-back one-goal victories.
- Baylee Swarrow scored both of Beth-Center’s goals to lead the Bulldogs over non-section foe Jeannette, 2-0.
Playoff-bound Beth-Center gets back to .500, improving to 8-8 overall.
The loss for Jeannette (1-13) is its third consecutive without a goal.
Boys soccer
Cam Frolo scored five goals, including his 100th career marker, as Monessen edged McKeesport in a non-section match, 6-5.
The final goal for Frolo got him to the century mark. Morgan Madison also scored for Monsessen (4-13), which has won two straight matches.
Jack Sacco made 10 saves for the Greyhounds.
McKeesport falls to 3-13 overall.
- Two goals in the first half were enough for Baldwin as it outlasted Ringgold, 2-1, in a non-section match.
Less than two minutes into the match, Bibas Rai scored for the Highlanders. Baldwin (7-10-1) went up 2-0 in the 20th minute with a Ray Thomas header off a corner kick.
Ringgold (10-7-0) answered four minutes into the second half when Andrew Bottino scored off a pass from Frankie Lowstetter. Jeremy Mullen made seven saves for the Rams, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Field hockey
The Washington & Jefferson women’s field hockey team scored both its goals in the first 17 minutes and kept that lead for a 2-0 win over The Sage Colleges in an Empire 8 Conference game.
It is the fifth consecutive victory for W&J (3-1, 7-4).
Reghan Dunn and Rachel Fromm scored for the Presidents.
Women’s soccer
Wies Achtereekte scored in the 86th minute to tie the game as Washington & Jefferson and Chatham battled to a 1-1 draw in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference match.
Achtereekte buried the equalizer on a loose ball that the Chatham (1-0-2, 4-4-4) goalkeeper could not corral.
W&J (1-0-2, 3-7-2) trailed nearly the entire match after giving up a goal within the first five minutes.
