Women’s soccer
Washington & Jefferson scored four times in the second half for a 5-0 PAC victory over host Bethany on Tuesday and secure a spot in the conference postseason tournament.
The Presidents (4-0-3, 6-7-3) remain unbeaten in league play and the victory guarantees a top-three finish.
Five goals set a single-game season high for the Presidents, who have outscored their opposition 15-2 in conference play.
Brianna McGowan, Hannah Johnston, Katie Hahn, Marcy Saldivar, Chandler Marteeny each scored one goal for the Presidents.
In the NFL
Trent Williams stayed put, as did Josh Norman, Chris Harris Jr. and Le’Veon Bell. Jamal Adams, Melvin Gordon and Patrick Peterson aren’t going anywhere, either.
The NFL trade deadline was a dud this year but only because teams didn’t wait for the cutoff to swap draft picks and established stars, something they’d been doing since August.
The big news Tuesday was Williams returning to the Washington Redskins. A person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the left tackle ended his season-long holdout after not getting traded.
The only big name traded at the deadline was Aqib Talib , but unlike seven years ago when he was dealt from Tampa Bay to New England at midseason, Talib is no longer in his prime or headed to a contender.
The Rams traded the 33-year-old cornerback to Miami along with a fifth-round pick in 2020 for an undisclosed draft choice. But the 12-year veteran is on IR with a rib injury and likely won’t play again this season.
Seton Hall coach suspended 2 games
The season has gotten off to a shaky start for No 12 Seton Hall and basketball coach Kevin Willard.
The university announced Tuesday the NCAA is investigating the program and Willard is sitting out at least two games in what has to be considered a suspension.
Seton Hall didn’t say what the NCAA enforcement staff was investigating, but it was working with the ruling body for college sports.
The Asbury Park Press reported the investigation involved transfer tampering, and the New York Post said it involved the transfer of Taurean Thompson from Syracuse in the fall of 2017.
In the NHL
Andrei Svechnikov scored twice in the final 10:47, including a spectacular lacrosse-style goal that tied it, and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied to beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Svechnikov earned a spot in the highlight reels by bringing the puck behind the net, scooping it up on his stick blade, lifting it to chest-level and tucking it over goalie David Rittich’s right shoulder.
He followed that with a power-play connection with 7:25 remaining – his second goal with the man advantage in two games – to help the Hurricanes win their second straight and beat ex-coach Bill Peters for the first time in three tries.
PSU player reprimanded for spitting on opponent
The Big Ten has reprimanded Penn State defensive tackle Antonio Shelton for spitting on a Michigan State player during a game.
The conference also said Tuesday it supports the one-game suspension Shelton was given by Penn State.
Shelton will be out of the lineup for the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions during their next game Nov. 9 at No. 13 Minnesota.
Shelton was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct midway through the fourth quarter of Penn State’s 28-7 victory over the Spartans on Saturday.
