Fort Cherry to volleyball finals

Second-seeded Fort Cherry roared into the WPIAL Class A volleyball finals by rolling over previously undefeated Shenango in three games during the semifinals at Our Lady of Scared Heart High School.

Fort Cherry won by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-22.

The Rangers are 15-4 and will play defending champion Bishop Canevin in the championship match Saturday (noon) at Fox Chapel High School. Bishop Canevin and Fort Cherry are Section 3-A rivals. The Crusaders defeated Fort Cherry twice during the regular season.

Washington County will have two teams in the finals. The Rangers will be joined by Canon-McMillan, which will play North Allegheny in the Class 4A final at 6 p.m. Fort Cherry and Canon-McMillan will try to become the first teams from Washington County to win a WPIAL volleyball championship.

FSU-Alabama set series

Florida State and Alabama are set to play a home-and-home series in the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

The schools announced the games on Thursday. The Seminoles will host Alabama on Aug. 30, 2025 in their first meeting in Tallahassee. The Crimson Tide hosts the second game on Sept. 19, 2026.

The two teams last met in 2017, playing the first college game in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Alabama will play two Power 5 nonconference opponents in each of those seasons, also facing Wisconsin in 2025 and West Virginia in 2026.

Florida State will also play Notre Dame in 2026.

Warriors’ Curry has broken hand

In a matter of months, the once-unbeatable Golden State Warriors have gone from a starting lineup featuring five All-Stars to a cast of youngsters almost nobody knows.

At least to start the season they had staples Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney to lean on for leadership.

Now, Curry and Looney are hurt and Green is dealing with a balky back. And the Warriors have looked anything but dominant during a 1-3 start.

“It’s been a tough start for us on many levels, so we’re just trying to find our footing,” coach Steve Kerr said. “This puts us in a tough spot, so we’ll assess it and go from there.”

Curry joined Splash Brother Klay Thompson as the latest sidelined star. The two-time MVP broke his left hand in a 121-110 loss to Phoenix on Wednesday night and it remained unclear a day later how long he might be sidelined, while Splash Brother Thompson could miss the entire season recovering from July 2 surgery for a torn ACL in his left knee that he hurt in a Game 6 loss in the NBA Finals that gave Toronto its first title. Curry underwent a CT scan Thursday but the team said it would have specialists evaluate the results before providing an update on his status.

In the NBA

Kendrick Nunn scored a career-high 28 points to add to his record-setting start and Miami beat Atlanta 106-97 on Thursday night, giving the Heat two wins over the Hawks in three days.

Nunn’s 112 points are the highest total through the first five games for any undrafted player in NBA history. Connie Hawkins of the Phoenix Suns scored 105 points in his first five games of the 1969-70 season.

Nunn, a 6-2 guard from Oakland University in Michigan, scored 14 points in the third quarter. He began his career with 24 points against Memphis on Oct. 23, and he has kept shooting. He has scored at least 24 points three times in Miami’s first five games.
