WVU-Duquesne game
to benefit Ohio victimsWest Virginia University will play an exhibition men’s basketball game to benefit the victims and families affected by a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
The Mountaineers will host Duquesne in Morgantown on Nov. 1. Proceeds will benefit the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund.
The nonprofit Dayton Foundation is overseeing the fund. The Aug. 4 mass shooting in Dayton’s Oregon District left nine people dead and dozens injured.
The NCAA allows a team to use one of its two possible exhibition games against a Division I opponent for raising funds for a catastrophic event.
Source: Brown eligible to play for PatriotsAntonio Brown is said to be eligible to play against Miami. Whether he actually does after just three practices with the Patriots is still not clear.
“We’re determining that,” coach Bill Belichick said Friday. “I’m not gonna hand out a copy of the game plan. We’ll do what we think is best for the team.”
The star wide receiver Brown was not placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, two people with direct knowledge of the decision told the Associated Press on Friday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced.
Belichick, whose team faces the Dolphins on Sunday, would not confirm the move by the NFL before practice.
Brown has been accused of rape and sexual assault in a civil case in Florida and denies the allegations by his former trainer. He won’t go on the exempt list this week because no criminal charges have been filed and because the NFL hasn’t fully developed its investigation. Players on the list can’t play in games or practice with a team but are still paid. A player can be played on the exempt list at any point.
Chappell shoots 59 at The Greenbrier
Last fall, Kevin Chappell was at home recuperating from back surgery. On Friday in his first PGA Tour event since surgery, he had the 11th sub-60 round in tour history.
Chappell shot an 11-under 59 in the second round of A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. He missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-4 ninth to fall a stroke short of Jim Furyk’s tour record.
“I was trying to keep the mindset, keep the foot on the gas and attack,” Chappell said. “All in all, couldn’t be happier with where I’m at.”
A day after shooting a 71, Chappell opened with a par on No. 10, then birdied the next eight to make the turn in 28. He birdied No. 1 to tie the PGA Tour record for consecutive birdies set by Mark Calcavecchia in the 2009 Canadian Open, and got to 11 under with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7.
Furyk set the record in 2016 with a 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship.
Chappell was 10 under for the tournament, three shots behind leaders Scottie Scheffler, Joaquin Niemann of Chile and Robby Shelton.
Scheffler and Niemann shot 62. Shelton, the first-round leader, followed an opening 62 with a 65. They were at 13 under.
Fury to fight Wallin
Tyson Fury ended Wladimir Klitschko’s long reign as heavyweight champion and showed how Deontay Wilder could be beaten, only to leave the ring with a draw.
Lately, though, Fury has been treading more carefully. Perhaps too carefully for a man who considers himself the heavyweight champion of the world.
Fury fights his second straight no-name opponent today night, taking on Sweden’s Otto Wallin in a scheduled 12-round fight. The big Englishman is a huge favorite in a bout that seems little more than a chance for Fury to break a sweat and collect a payday while awaiting a scheduled February rematch with Wilder.
“The unknown is more exciting,” Fury said of his latest opponent. “But the fact is I don’t underestimate anybody.”
