Boys soccer

Ringgold scored early and often Saturday, routing visiting Uniontown 13-1 in Class 3A Section 3.

Ringgold (3-1, 5-3) led 10-0 at halftime.

Seniors Frankie Lowstetter and Jason Vaccaro led the way for the Rams. Lowstetter scored three goals and had two assists, and Vaccaro had five assists. Junior Bradin had a hat trick and seniors Brian Long and Andrew Bottino each tallied two goals.

Ringgold outshot Uniontown 42-2.

  • Canon-McMillan and Upper St. Clair battled to a 1-1 tie in a key Class 4A match.

The Big Macs struck first when Nino Civitate scored with 21 minutes left in regulation.

USC, however, forced overtime on a Jack Myers goal with three minutes left in regulation.

Canon-McMillan played much of the overtime shorthanded after losing a player on a second yellow card but USC was unable to take advantage.

  • Brian Hustava and Leyton Hustava scored goals and Bentworth slipped past visiting Chartiers-Houston 2-1 in a Section 4-A matchup Saturday morning.

Josh Ambrose had an assist and goalkeeper Landon Urcho made seven saves for Bentworth (3-2, 4-3), which moved above the .500 mark.

Chartiers-Houston slipped to 1-2-1 in section and 4-2-1 overall.

Girls soccer

Monessen scored the tying goal with five minutes left in regulation, then defeated Albert Gallatin 2-1 on a goal by Mya Petruska with 30 seconds left in the second overtime of a nonsection game.

Albert Gallatin led 1-0 before Monessen’s Zalendria Hardison scored to force overtime. It came six minutes after AG (1-5) had scored its lone goal.

Goalkeeper Kendelle Weston made 13 saves for Monessen (2-5).

  • Rhea Kijowski scored three goals and added an assist to help Waynesburg defeat previously undefeated Bentworth, 5-3, in a nonsection match.

Jillian Kijowski scored a goal and had two assists for the Raiders (3-1), who led 3-2 at halftime.

Kaley Pell sealed the win with a goal with 9:47 to play.

Paige Marshelek scored on a goal and penalty kick and Jocelyn Timlin scored with 28:03 to play for Bentworth.

  • Canon-McMillan won its third consecutive match, defeating winless Shaler, 5-1, in a nonsection match.

Annabel Thomas led the Big Macs (4-2) by scoring three goals, helping Canon-McMillan pull away in the second half. Sarah Tonkovich and Lexi Twaddle had the other goals for the Big Macs.

  • Once-beaten Plum was able to pull out a 5-3 victory over host Trinity in a Class 3A Section 3 match.

Trinity (2-2-1, 2-2-1) received goals from Alyssa Clutter, Hannah Abbondanza and Courtney Dahlquist.

Plum is 3-1 in section and 5-1 overall.

  • Searra Catholic was a 6-2 winner over visiting Chartiers-Houston in a nonsection match.

C-H (4-3) had goals from Alyssa Wright and Lexi Durkacs.

Women’s soccer

Freshman Lindsie Galbreath scored a goal in the 106th minute as California University posted a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Clarion in PSAC West action Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

The Vulcans improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

  • Two early first half goals lifted Penn State Behrend to a 4-2 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College women’s soccer team in nonconference play at Alexandre Stadium.

The Lions led 2-02 at halftime and 4-0 in the second half before W&J scored on goals by MaKenna Lewis and Marcy Salvidar.

Women’s field hockey

Despite scoring the first goal of the afternoon, the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team fell 3-1 in non-conference action to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday.

In the game’s 26th minute, Josephine Robson inserted W&J’s first penalty corner of the day to Reghan Dunn, who collected the ball and fired in her first goal of the season.

SUNY Geneseo tied the score before half, then outscored W&J (2-3) by a 2-0 margin in the second half.

In golf

Joaquin Niemann was an 18-year-old amateur when he arrived in West Virginia two years ago and tied for 29th in the only PGA Tour event he played outside of the U.S. Open.

In 2018, he improved to a tie for fifth at the tournament.

Now he has a chance to become the first player from Chile to win on tour.

Niemann shot a 2-under 68 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead in A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier.

The 20-year-old Niemann was 15 under with a round left in the season-opening event at the Old White TPC.

“I just feel like I’m almost a member here,” Niemann said. “I just like being out here. Always when you play on a course that you know already it helps a lot. I think this is the course I have played more on tour.”

Niemann had a bogey and three birdies, including a 4-foot putt on the par-5 17th.

No third-round leader has gone on to win the tournament.

Nate Lashley, Richy Werenski and Robby Shelton were tied for second at 13 under. Lashley and Werenski shot 65, and Shelton had a 70.

Adam Long and Scotty Scheffler were 12 under. Long shot 70, and Scheffler had a 71.
