Penguins sign Legare
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Nathan Legare to a three-year, entry-level contract, it was announced Friday by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.
“Nathan has had a really strong training camp thus far,” said Rutherford. “We’ve been impressed with his offensive instincts and his overall approach to the game. We’re thrilled to get him signed.”
The Penguins moved up in the 2019 NHL Draft to select Legare with the 74th overall pick, which was in the third round. The Penguins traded three picks to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for the selection.
Legare, 18, has made an impact in his short time in a Penguins uniform. The forward recorded three points in three games at the Prospects Challenge in Buffalo in September. His success has continued into the preseason as he has registered a team-leading three points in two exhibition games, including two goals in a 23-second span Thursday against Columbus.
The Penguins also trimmed their training camp roster by assigning Chase Berger, Jordy Bellerive, Jan Drozg, Ben Sexton, Matt Abt, Michael Kim, Jon Lizotte, Alex D’Orio and Dustin Tokarski to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
Defenseman Calen Addison has been returned to his junior team, Lethbridge of the Western Hockey League.
Pittsburgh’s 46-man training camp roster includes 28 forwards, 14 defensemen and four goaltenders.
In the majors
Yadier Molina had three of St. Louis’ four hits, including a two-run single, and the Cardinals held off the fading Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Friday.
Carlos Martinez got the final two outs a day after a brutal blown save, and the Cardinals stretched their NL Central leadto five games over Chicago.
Chicago has totaled nine runs while losing its past four games. The Cardinals have won the first two games of this key four-game set, and they’ll play the Cubs five more times over their final eight games.
In golf
Byeong Hun An finished off a 6-under 66 in the morning and posted another 66 on Friday afternoon to end his long day atop the leaderboard in the storm-delayed Sanderson Farms Championship.
An was at 12-under 132 and had a two-shot lead over a group that included J.T. Poston and Tom Hoge.
Because the tournament lost about five hours Thursday due to thunderstorms, the second round could not be completed because of darkness at the Country Club of Jackson.
Cameron Percy of Australia was at 9 under, while Seamus Power of Ireland was at 8 under. Both had seven holes left in the second round.
