Girls soccer

Lexi Twaddle scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and Canon-McMillan earned a 2-0 shutout victory over Penn-Trafford in a non-section game.

The lead was protected by C-M (7-2) goalkeeper Abby Hipkins, who made nine saves, as the Big Macs won their sixth consecutive match.

Penn-Trafford (7-2) had its seven-game winning streak snapped.

  • A second-half goal broke a tie as Bentworth defeated Trinity, 3-2, in a non-section match.

The match was tied at 2-2 at the half after Trinity goals from Hannah Abbondanza and Alyssa Clutter.

Trinity falls to 2-4-1 overall.

Paige Marshalek scored two goals and Jocelyn Timlin had the other as Bentworth improves to 9-1 overall.

  • Continuing a lightning-suspended game, Elizabeth Forward scored a pair of goals in the final 60 minutes to upend Ringgold, 2-1, in a Section 2-AAA match.

The match resumed with Ringgold (4-2, 4-5) leading 1-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the first half.

Elizabeth Forward improves to 4-1 in the section and 4-2 overall.

  • Three second-half goals allowed Waynesburg to hold off Belle Vernon, 4-2, in a non-section match.

The Raiders led 1-0 at halftime and added to that lead when Rhea Kijowski and Jillian Kijowksi both scored to make it 3-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half. Rhea Kijowksi finished with a hat trick.

Jillian Butchki and Farrah Reader each scoring for Belle Vernon (6-2).

Waynesburg (5-2) has won five of its last six matches.

Boys soccer

Canon-McMillan scored three unanswered goals to come back and defeat Bethel Park, 3-2, in a Section 2-AAAA match.

Owen Maher cut the Big Macs’ deficit to 2-1. Anderson Jones then tied the game at 2-2. Nino Civitate found Joey Fonagy for the game-winning goal as Canon-McMillan improved to 5-1-1 in the section and 8-2-1 overall.

Bethel Park drops to 2-5 in the setion and 3-5-1 overall.

  • Brian Hustava scored five goals to lead Bentworth over Section 4-A foe California, 9-2.

Jerzy Timlin added a pair of goals for Bentworth (5-2, 7-3), which has won its last four matches.

Derek Keyes scored both goals for California (0-7, 2-8).

  • Niko Apodiakos broke a scoreless tie on a penalty kick with 13:27 left in the second half to lift Ringgold over rival Ringgold, 1-0, in a Section 3-AAA match.

Belle Vernon (7-0, 10-0) goalkeeper TJ Watson helped keep the game scoreless by making four saves. It is the fifth shutout for Watson this season and his third straight game holding an opponent scoreless.

The loss moves Ringgold (4-3, 6-5) into a tie for third place with Laurel Highlands in the section standings.

Field hockey

The Washington & Jefferson women’s field hockey team opened Empire 8 Conference play with a 3-0 shutout loss against Utica.

Utica’s Josie Sgarlata opened the scoring with 33 seconds left in the first period. The Pioneers, who earned their first win of the season, the scored a pair of second-half goals to extend their lead.

W&J goalie Rena Israel made 11 saves but the Presidents drop to 0-1 in the conference and 2-4 overall.

In golf

  • Rachel Rohanna of Waynesburg shot 4-under 68 and moved up 28 spots on the leaderboard at the Symetra Tour’s Guardian Championship in Prattville, Ala.

Rohanna’s round included six birdies and moved her into a tie for 26th place at 2-under through two rounds. She trails leader Kelly Tan by eight strokes. Tan has a three-stroke lead over six players.
