1957 – Bobby Bragan hears on the radio he has been fired as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ manager and replaced by Philadelphia third base coach Danny Murtaugh. Pittsburgh general manager Joe L. Brown leaked news of the hiring before informing his disposed manager.

1960 – The fourth-place Cleveland Indians trade manager Joe Gordon to sixth-place Detroit for the Tigers’ manager, Jimmy Dykes.

1960 – The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, 43-16, in an exhibition game in Canada.

1961 – The Pirates score a 19-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals for the largest shutout in a National League night game.

1978 – Tom Watson takes advantage of rainsoftened greens to shoot 4-under-par 67 and take the first-round lead in the PGA Championship at Oakmont Country Club.

1979 – The New York Yankees purchase Lenny Randle from Pittsburgh to fill the roster spot of Thurman Munson, who died in a plane crash.

1980 – Sandra Post chips in from 30 feet for birdie on the third hole of a playoff to beat Donna Caponi Young and win the $100,000 West Virginia LPGA Classic at Speidel Golf Course in Wheeling, W.Va.

1990 – Doug Drabek’s bid for a no-hitter is broken up by Philadelphia’s Sil Campusano with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Drabek settles for a one-hitter as the Pirates roll over the Phillies, 11-0.
