1910 – The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates played to an 8-8 tie. Each team had 38 at-bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, two errors, five strikeouts, three walks, one hit batsman and one passed ball.

1956 – George Seitz, who coached Hickory High School’s cross country team to a state championship, and also coached the school’s basketball team, resigns. Leo Gispanski is hired as the basketball coach and Edgar Vahey will coach the cross country team.

1969 – Pittsburgh’s Roberto Clemente hits three home runs in the Pirates’ 10-5 win at San Francisco.

1991 – Oval Jaynes is hired as athletic director at Pitt. Jaynes spent the previous five years as athletic director at Colorado State.

2008 – Michael Phelps swims into history as the winningest Olympic athlete ever with his 10th and 11th career gold medals — and five world records in five events at the Beijing Games. He wins the 200-meter butterfly and swims leadoff for the U.S. 800 freestyle relay team, which shatters the world mark by more than four seconds. Kristin Armstrong wins the women’s time trial, making her the second American women’s cyclist to become an Olympic champion.
