ON THIS DATE
Sept. 1
1953 – Ray Williams of Fairport, N.Y., is hired as head basketball and baseball coach, and athletic director, at Waynesburg College.
1976 – Chuck Heberling becomes Executive Secretary of the WPIAL, replacing the retired Bill Lohr.
1981 – Hickory’s Jim Brown hits a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give his team a 12-10 win over Pliska’s in the final game of the Ten Mile Valley Softball League B Division playoff series.
1989 – South Fayette High School’s Morris Richardson strips the football from a Peters Township player early in the third quarter and returns it 40 yards for a touchdown, and Steve Dragan kicks the extra point, as the Lions edge the Indians, 7-6, in the season opener for both teams.
1990 – Washington High School’s Bryan Milligan scores on a 98-yard run and an 81-yard punt return as the Prexies defeat Trinity 49-13 and spoil the coaching debut of the Hillers’ Ted Petersen.
1992 – The Pittsburgh Steelers release linebacker Huey Richardson, the team’s first-round draft choice in 1991.
1995 – Brad Miller runs for two scores and Derrick Dow throws for another score as Ringgold defeats defending WPIAL and PIAA champion McKeesport 28-14, ending the Tigers’ 15-game winning streak.
1997 – Hugh Baiocchi wins the Pittsburgh Senior Classic held at Quicksilver Golf Club when Bob Duval squanders a four-shot lead over the final six holes.
2001 – Pitcher Danny Almonte, who dominated the Little League World Series with his 70 mph fastballs, is ruled ineligible after government records experts determine he is 14, and that birth certificates showing he is two years younger are false. The finding nullifies all the victories by his Bronx, New York, team, the Rolando Paulino Little League All-Stars.
