Special Honorees chosen for Hall of Fame
The Washington-Greene County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame announced Monday that three Special Honorees will be recognized at the organization’s banquet in June and join the previously announced Class of 2020 inductees.
The Special Honorees are: George Alvin “Al” Helfer, Harry Harvey and the 1958 California State Teachers College football team.
Helfer was a broadcaster who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., in August and received the Ford C. Frick Award for Excellence in Baseball Broadcasting. He was born in Elrama and attended Washington and Jefferson College. He died May 16, 1975.
Harvey is a member of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame (2002) and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (1970). He excelled as a trainer, driver and farm manager. Included in the races he won is the Hambletonian (1953) with Helicopter. He trained and drove the great Albatross. Harvey died in 2016 at age 92.
The 1958 Cal football team, is the team of yesteryear. The Vulcans posted an 8-0 record, one of only three undefeated seasons in program history. They outscored the opposition 207-31. The Vulcans ranked first in rush defense, allowing just 42 yards per game. Cal was ranked second nationally in total defense.
In the NHL
Andrew Mangiapane had three goals and an assist, and the Calgary Flames rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.
Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and an assist for Calgary, which trailed 3-1 early in the third period. Sam Bennett and Sean Monahan also scored.
- Evgenii Dadonov and Mike Hoffman scored, Aaron Ekblad had two assists and the slumping Florida Panthers beat the San Jose Sharks, 5-3.
Colton Sceviour, Anton Stralman and Vincent Trocheck also scored for Florida, which had lost six of seven. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots, and the Panthers moved within two points of idle Toronto for third place in the Atlantic Division.
- Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots, Conor Garland scored his team-leading 20th goal and the Arizona Coyotes beat the New York Islanders, 2-1.
The Coyotes followed one of their best games of the season against Washington with another solid performance two days later.
Astros pitcher Martes suspended for season
Houston Astros pitcher Francis Martes was suspended for the 2020 season following his second positive test for a performance-enhancing substance under baseball’s major league drug program.
Martes tested positive for Boldenone, the commissioner’s office said Monday. Boldenone is sold under the brand name Equipose and is used commonly on horses.
A 24-year-old right-hander, Martes is on the Astros’ 40-man major league roster but hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2017.
He was suspended last March 12 for 80 games following a positive test for Clomiphene, a women’s fertility drug that has been used by some athletes to counter side effects of steroids use. Martes returned Aug. 21 and made two starts for the rookie level Gulf Coast Astros and one for Quad Cities of the Class A Midwest League. He was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in 5 1/3 innings.
