1934 – Carl Hubbell strikes out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin in succession, but the American League comes back to win the All-Star game 9-7 at the Polo Grounds.

1936 – Chuck Klein hits four home runs to power the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-6 victory in 10 innings over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field. Klein almost homered in the second inning when he sent Pirates outfielder Paul Waner to the wall in right to haul in a long fly ball.

1960 – Lee Petty wins the 100-mile NASCAR race at Heidelberg Raceway with his son, Richard, finishing as the runner-up.

1972 – Former Trinity coach Ron Junko is hired as head wrestling coach at McGuffey High School.

1986 – Dave Cook resigns as Canon-McMillan’s wrestling coach to become an insurance agent. Cooke coached C-M for six seasons and led the Big Macs to the WPIAL team tournament finals each of the last four seasons with two championships. Canon-McMillan had a 101-17-1 record in dual meets under Cook.

1999 – Team USA wins the Women’s World Cup over China in sudden death. The Americans win 5-4 in penalty kicks, with defender Brandi Chastain kicking in the game winner.
