1926 – At snow-swept Pitt Stadium, Washington High School defeats Wilkinsburg 26-0 before a crowd of 8,000 to win the WPIAL football championship.
1926 – In the biggest upset of the college football season, Carnegie Tech defeats previously unbeaten Notre Dame 19-0 before 45,000 at Forbes Field. Confident that his team would win, Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne does not attend, instead staying in the midwest to work on future schedules for the Fighting Irish.
1949 – Steve Van Buren of the Philadelphia Eagles becomes the second NFL player, and first in 16 years, to rush for more than 200 yards with a 205-yard performance in a 34-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
1982 – Scott Henson scores on a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Ringgold defeats New Castle 6-3 in the WPIAL Class AAAA Division II football championship game at Pitt Stadium.
1990 – Jeff Petri’s three-point basket sends the game into overtime and Washington & Jefferson pulls out a 77-74 victory over Denison in the Presidents’ home opener. Matt Johnson scores 25 points to pace W&J.
1994 – Joe Montana of the Kansas City Chiefs becomes the fifth quarterback to surpass 40,000 passing yards in a 10-9 loss at Seattle.
1998 – Texas’ Ricky Williams becomes the leading rusher in Division I-A history, breaking Tony Dorsett’s record set 22 years earlier.
1999 – Lanfer Simpson rushes for 100 yards on 20 carries, scores three touchdowns and kicks a 32-yard field goal as Waynesburg defeats Washington 30-3 in the WPIAL Class AA championship game at Three Rivers Stadium. Waynesburg becomes the first Greene County school to win a WPIAL football title since Jefferson-Morgan in 1974.
