1903 – The Boston Pilgrims win the first World Series, five games to three, with a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1960 – Bill Mazeroski opens the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run off Ralph Terry of the New York Yankees to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 10-9 victory and the World Series championship.

1967 – The Pittsburgh Pirates hire Larry Shepard as manager, replacing Danny Murtaugh.

1971 – Bruce Kison pitches 6 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Luke Walker and pinch-hitter Milt May drives in Bob Robertson with a game-winning single in the seventh inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the visiting Baltimore Orioles, 4-3, in the first World Series game played at night.

1978 – Ed Frost throws a 32-yard touchdown pass to Julius Phillips and Beth-Center knocks Albert Gallatin out of first place in the Century Conference by defeating the Colonials, 6-0, in a rain-plagued game.

1981 – Trinity High School’s Mike Ault scores three goals in the Hillers’ 6-0 soccer victory over Chartiers Valley. Ault sets the state single-season goals record with 60.

1984 – California University quarterback Kevin Russell passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns as the Vulcans defeat Shippensburg 28-17. Russell becomes the PSAC’s all-time passing leader with 5,386 yards, breaking the record of 5,197 by East Stroudsburg’s Bill Duckett.

2007 – Robert Heller rushes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, Kyle Kyper passes for two scores and Waynesburg’s defense holds Bethany to five first downs as the Yellow Jackets defeat the Bison 45-7 and improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1967.
