1911 – Cy Young, 44, beats the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-0, at Forbes Field for his 511th and final major league victory.

1927 – Gene Tunney wins a unanimous 10-round decision over Jack Dempsey at Soldier Field in Chicago to retain his world heavyweight title. The fight is marred by a long 10-count in the seventh round. Dempsey knocks Tunney to the mat, but Dempsey doesn’t go to a neutral corner. The referee doesn’t start counting until four or five seconds after Tunney is down. Tunney regains his feet and goes on to win.

1971 – The Pittsburgh Pirates clinch their second consecutive National League East Division title when they defeat the second-place St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, 5-1. Luke Walker and Dave Giusti combine to toss a six-hitter to beat Bob Gibson, who no-hit the Bucs last month in his only other start against the team.

1972 – Greg Moten catches touchdown passes of 75, six and five yards from Bob Somplatsky and undefeated Avella gets its third consecutive shutout, 35-0, over host Carmichaels.

1974 – The Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos play to a 35-35 tie in the first regular-season overtime game in NFL history. Joe Gilliam passes for 348 yards and throws a Steelers-record 50 passes.

1975 – Richie Zisk and Dave Parker each drive in four runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-3 and clinch their fifth National League East Division title in six years.

1985 – Brian Davis rushes for 100 yards in his first collegiate game, but Pitt loses to Boston College, 29-22.

1989 – Chris Lenhart of Ringgold charges from behind in the final 300 yards to win the boys race at the Washington County Coaches Cross Country Meet at Mingo Park. Kathy Knabb of Peters Township wins the girls race.

1991 – Pitcher Doug Drabek strikes out eight and the Pittsburgh Pirates win their second consecutive National East Division title with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Three Rivers Stadium.

2000 – Lanfer Simpson and Lee Fritz combine for 321 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as undefeated Waynesburg High School rallies for a 50-35 victory over visiting Seton LaSalle. Bruce Gradkowski completes 30 of 50 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns for the Rebels.

2005 – P-Forty-Seven, with driver Dave Palone, takes the lead in the stretch and wins the 60th Little Brown Jug, the second leg of of the Triple Crown for 3-year-old pacers. It’s the first Jug win for Palone, a Meadows regular. Palone qualified three horses for the final, including heat wins with P-Forty-Seven and Up Front Tornado.
