1962 – Sonny Liston knocks out Floyd Patterson at 2:06 of the first round at Comiskey Park in Chicago to win the world heavyweight boxing title.
1976 – Dennis Pazzabon runs for a touchdown and throws for another score, and Kent Ewell kicks two field goals, as Waynesburg College defeats host California State 20-14.
1981 – Willie Davis rushes for 276 yards on 21 carries, and teammate Jim Edwards gains 164 yards on 18 attempts, as host Charleroi High School defeats McGuffey 35-13 in a Century Conference football opener.
1981 – California High School’s Brian Schaum scores five touchdowns – on runs of 11, four and one yards, and touchdown passes of 28 and 11 yards from Brendan Folmar – as the Trojans defeat visiting Carmichaels 34-19 in a Tri-County South Conference game.
1987 – Darrin Balliard’s 25-yard field goal as time expries gives undefeated Ringgold a 12-10 victory over Trinity at College Field.

Jake Orr of South Franklin Township had a rare double eagle Thursday while playing for the McGuffey High School golf team in a match against Chartiers-Houston at Dogwood Hills Golf Club. Orr had a 2 on the 455-yard par-5 No. 8 hole. His playing partners were Damien Dague, Caleb Passieu and Sam Shaw.
