1952 – Manueal Pihakis of Canonsburg and Waynesburg College’s Ray Carlson qualify for the final United States Olympic Wrestling Trials to be held in Ames, Iowa. Pihakis (114.5 pounds) and Carlson (174.5) were weight class winners at the district qualifier held in Pittsburgh.
1988 – The Waynesburg College basketball team, which had a 32-3 record, advanced to the NAIA Final Four and was ranked a high as No. 2 in the nation, is named the Observer-Reporter Sports Headliner.
1988 – Trinity High School’s Karen Donley, who averaged 20.7 points per game and set the school’s single-game scoring record with 37 points against Erie McDowell, is named the Observer-Reporter Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
1993 – The Pittsburgh Penguins get a shorthanded goal from Rick Tocchet and go on to defeat the New York Rangers 4-2 to extend their NHL record winning streak to 17 games.
1995 – Larry DiIanni, a former coach at Sto-Rox, is hired as head football coach at Canon-McMillan High School.
2007 – Roger Goodell cracks down on the player misconduct that plagued his first seven months as NFL commissioner, suspending Tennessee’s Adam “Pacman” Jones for the 2007 season and Cincinnati’s Chris Henry for eight games.
2010 – Beth-Center senior Megan Sowers is named the Observer-Reporter Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

1958 – Charleroi High School’s Ollie Payne is named to the Associated Press all-state basketball first team.
1961 – In their first game as defending World Series champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates rally to beat the host San Francisco Giants 8-7 on Bill Virdon’s home run in the ninth inning at Candlestick Park.
1969 – Waynesburg College hires Rudy Marisa to be its men’s basketball coach. Marisa was an assistant coach at Trinity High School and had been head coach at Dunbar and Albert Gallatin high schools.
1972 – Andre St. Laurent scores two goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the visiting New York Islanders 5-2 to send their best-of-five playoff series back to Long Island for a deciding game.
1984 – Peters Township’s Lynnette Swartz, who averaged 18.3 points and eight rebounds per game, is named the Observer-Reporter Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
1984 – The Pittsburgh Pirates are temporarily left without a cable TV home as Home Sports Entertainment folds, citing lackluster subscription figures and unsatisfactory advertising support.
1986 – The Pittsburgh Spirit indoor soccer team, which lost a reported $2.4 million over the last year, folds. The Major Indoor Soccer League team is the second Pittsburgh professional sports franchise to be folded in a 19-month period by Edward J. DeBartolo. He disbanded the Pittsburgh Maulers in October 1984 after the United States Football League team lost an estimated $10 million in its only season of operation.
1988 – Tricia Fabain throws a perfect game, her 11th career no-hitter, and Chartiers-Houston defeats South Fayette 12-0 in a Section 12-AA softball game.
1989 – Monessen forward Chad Scott is named to the Associated Press Small School All-State Basketball first team.
1991 – Penn State, citing Big Ten schedule commitments, announces the suspension of its football series with Pitt after the 1992 season.
2010 – South Fayette’s Mike Lamberti, who helped the Lions win the PIAA Class AA championship, is named the Observer-Reporter Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
