High school baseball

Four Chartiers-Houston pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Bucs blanked visiting Burgettstown 3-0 Friday in Class 2A Section 4.

Jimmy Sadler scored two runs, stole two bases and pitched the seventh inning to earn a save for the Bucs (3-1, 4-1). Sadler scored in the first inning on a two-out single by Roman Lombardi and that was all the offense C-H needed.

Starter Ryan Parise and relievers Matt Rieger, Austin Kuslock and Sadler held Burgettstown (2-2, 2-2) scoreless. Blue Devils starting pitcher Nathan Klodowski threw a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out eight.

n Trinity ended a long scoreless streak but didn’t have enough pitching and defense as it lost 14-4 at Laurel Highlands in a five-inning non-section game.

LH (4-1) did most of its damage in two innings: a five-run first and seven-run fourth. The Mustangs had 11 hits and Trinity committed five errors.

The Hillers (1-4) snapped a string of 24 consecutive scoreless innings with a run in the fourth and added three more in the fifth. Jeremy Sikora had two hits, including a double, and Forrest Havanis doubled.

n California scored a tiebreaking run in the top of the sixth inning on a bases-loaded catcher’s interference, then held host Waynesburg scoreless over the final two innings to defeat the Raiders 12-11 in a non-section slugfest.

Cal’s Jordan Kearns had two doubles and two RBI, Conner Vig scored four runs, Matt Trunzo doubled and had three RBI and Payton Conte doubled.

Logan Higgins went 4-for-5 with two doubles for Waynesburg (0-3). Mason Switalski also went 4-for-5 and had a double. Michael Davenport and Lincoln Park each doubled for the Raiders.

n Luke Wagner doubled in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give McGuffey an 8-7 victory over visiting Frazier in a non-section game.

Frazier (3-1) tied the game 7-7 by scoring three times in the top of the inning. Frazier led 3-1 after one but gave up five runs to McGuffey in the second inning.

Jake Orr hit a solo home run and Kyle Brookman had a double for the Highladers (3-1). That helped offset he seven errors.

n Drake Long hit two doubles and drove in three runs, and Gavin Pratt homered and had four RBI to lead Carmichaels to a 17-0 win in three innings over Jefferson-Morgan in non-section action.

Carmichaels (4-0) unleashed a 12-hit attack. Pratt hit a three-run homer that capped the Mikes’ nine-run first inning.

The Mikes have outscored their opponents 50-7.

n Joey Shumaker scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and Ringgold added two insurance runs in the sixth to win at Charleroi, 5-2, in a non-section game.

Winning pitcher Ashton Ray threw a three-hitter and struck out 11. Shumaker had a triple and Gage Fuller doubled for Ringgold (3-3).

Two of Charleroi’s three hits went for extra bases as Tyler O’Neil and Ben Shields each smacked a double. The Cougars are 1-3.

n Fort Cherry remained undefeated with an 8-2 win at Avella in a non-section game.

The Rangers (5-0) scored all the runs they would need in a four-run first inning. Pitchers Lane Miller and Ryan Craig combined on a four-hitter and struck out 14.

Mitchell Cook led FC at the plate with three hits, including a double, and three runs. Adam Wolf doubled. The Rangers have outscored their opponents 70-11.

Isiah Bradnick and Gavin Frank doubled for Avella (0-6).

nA four-run second inning helped sent West Greene to an 8-2 victory over Bentworth in a non-section game.

Winning pitcher Corey Wise went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Casey Miller had a two-run single for the Pioneers (2-1).

Bentworth fell to 0-4.

High school softball

Jefferson-Morgan pounded out 12 hits and took a 7-5 victory from California in a non-section game Friday.

The top four hitters in J-M’s lineup went 10-for-16 with three RBI and five runs.

No. 3 hitter Payton Farabee doubled, single twice and scored a run. Leadoff hitter Jasmine Demaske went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run. Kayla Larkin went 3-for-4 scored twice and drove in a run and cleanup hitter Savannah Clark had two hits and drove in a run for J-M (3-2).

Makayla Boda had two hits and scored a run and Taegan Gillen drove in two runs for the Trojans (2-1).

n Frazier scored five runs in the fourth inning and held off an upset bid by Charleroi, 5-4, in Class 2A Section 3.

Frazier (2-0, 4-2) had eight hits in the game and strung together four of them following a Charleroi error in the big fourth inning. Riley Evans had a double in the frame, the lone extra-base hit for the Commodores.

Kylie Quigley doubled and drove in two for Charleroi (1-1, 2-4). Sofia Celaschi also doubled.

n A 10-run fourth inning by Uniontown blew apart a 1-1 score and secured an 11-1 win over Ringgold in Class 4A Section 2.

Emma Noff had two hits and Ashley Robison drove in the only run for Ringgold (0-2, 0-4).

n Kailey Larcinese struck out 11 and allowed two hits in seven innings as Elizabeth Forwardrd shut out Belle Vernon 3-0 in Section 2 of Class 4A.

Larcinese added a single for EF (3-0, 5-2). Maren Metikosh and Abby Fabin had the only hits for Belle Vernon (1-1, 3-2).

n Bentworth scored nine runs over the fourth and fifth innings to ice a 10-7 victory over Beth-Center in Section 2-AA.

Emily Odell and Jaclyn Tatar each homered for Bentworth (1-2, 1-3). Winning pitcher Jessica Rothka tripled.

Jennifer Zelenick went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and five RBI for B-C (0-2, 1-2).

n Kiley Meek twirled a three-hit shutout and West Greene scored five times in the sixth inning en route to a 10-0 win over visiting Mapletown in Class A Section 2.

Taylor Karvan and London Whipkey each doubled and drove in two runs for the Pioneers (1-0, 4-1). Meek, who struck out six, helped her cause with a double.

n Madison Rinehart drove in the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning and Trinity edged Moon 3-2 in a Class 5A Section 4.

No other game details were made available.

Trinity is 1-1 in section and 2-1 overall. Moon is 1-2, 1-4.

Girls lacrosse

Sarah Rubican scored four goals, Gabby Tom had three scores and sisx assists, and Peters Township overwhelmed Norwin 16-2 Thursday night.

Rubican also had two assists. Karson Martin and Cassidy King each matched Tom with three goals, and Delaney Kern tallied a pair of goals for the Indians.

College baseball

Aaron Previsky belted a game-winning, three-run homer in the seventh inning of the opening game Friday as California split a doubleheader at Mercyhurst in PSAC West play, winning 4-3 before suffering a 7-4 loss.

In the opener, Cal trailed 3-1 entering the seventh. David Lee and Carter Chinn drew walks and Previsky connected for the three-run homer on a 1-2 count.

Winning pitcher Nick Riggle improved his record to 5-1.

In college basketball

Cincinnati has fired men’s basketball coach John Brannen following an investigation into reports of a rift with Bearcats players.

The school fired Brannen on Friday, six days after he was put on paid leave after six Cincinnati players decided to transfer last month. Tim Morris will serve as interim coach until a replacement is hired.
