1971 – Willie Stargell hits three home runs in a game for the second time in the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Atlanta Braves 10-2.
1971 – The NHL’s Board of Governors approve the sale of the Pittsburgh Penguins to a group of local investors headed by Tad Potter for more than $7 million.
1973 – Washington High School’s Guy Montecalvo is the only triple winner at the 16th Canon-McMillan Relays. Montecalvo wins the 100-yard dash (10.2), the 220 (22.8) and 440 (50.8). Canon-McMillan’s Bill Thomas wins the pole vault and sets the school record by clearing 12-6.
1980 – Bill Rodgers wins his third straight Boston Marathon. Rosie Ruiz is disqualified eight days later as women’s champion when it’s discovered she did not run the entire distance.
1981 – After giving up five runs in the top of the 11th, the Pittsburgh Pirates score six times in the bottom of the inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 13-12 at Three Rivers Stadium.
1991 – Former Ringgold High School quarterback Scott Zolak, a senior at Maryland, is selected in the fourth round of the NFL draft by the New England Patriots.
2001 – Hasim Rahman flattens Lennox Lewis with a stunning right hand near the end of the fifth round to win the WBC and IBF heavyweight titles in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history in Brakpan, South Africa.
2007 – Canon-McMillan’s Katelynd McElhany wins the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump, and finishes second in the 300 hurdles and long jump to win the Overall MVP at the Washington-Greene County Coaches Track meet.
