Bumgarner throws 7-inning no-hitter
Madison Bumgarner threw a seven-inning no-hitter, an achievement that won’t count in the Major League Baseball record book but completed a dominant day of Arizona Diamondbacks pitching for a 7-0 win over the Atlanta Braves and a doubleheader sweep Sunday.
After Zac Gallen tossed a one-hitter to win the opener 5-0, Bumgarner did even better.
Bumgarner struck out seven and the only Braves batter who reached base against him came on shortstop Nick Ahmed’s throwing error in the second inning.
College baseball
Washington & Jefferson swept a four-game series from Franciscan, winning 20-6 and 14-2 on the road Sunday and 15-3 and 12-0 at home Saturday.
W&J moves to 27-1 on the season.
n California was limited to only three runs Saturday while dropping both games of a doubleheader against Clarion, 3-1 and 3-2, at Wild Things Park.
Cal is 20-12 overall with an 11-9 PSAC West record.
Women’s soccer
Franciscan scored 17 seconds into the second half and added two late tallies to edge Waynesburg 3-0 and prevent the Yellow Jackets (3-6) from qualifying for the PAC tournament.
n Washington & Jefferson concluded its season with a 3-1 loss at Grove City. The Presidents finish with a 2-3-2 record. Katie Hahn scored the W&J goal.
Men’s soccer
The four-team PAC men’s soccer tournament will begin Tuesday.
Top-seeded Geneva will host No. 4 Westminster (5-4). Number 2 Grove City (7-1) will host No. 3 Washington & Jefferson (6-2-1) at 7:30 p.m.
n Franciscan scored two goals less than three minutes apart Saturday late in the match for a 3-1 victory over Waynesburg in the PAC. Ryan McCann’s goal for Waynesburg (3-5-1) tied the score at 1-1.
College softball
Washington & Jefferson College remained hot with its fourth-consecutive PAC doubleheader sweep Saturday, beating twice by 3-2 scores.
W&J moves to 17-12-1 on the season and 9-5 in the PAC.
Outstanding starting pitching performances by Alisha Kulka and Jordan Hinz were supported with a pair of saves by Sydney Petrowski.
n Westminster swept a PAC doubleheader from Waynesburg, 8-1 and 14-5.
Women’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson has the top seed fore the PAC tournament.
Seeding was determined and approved by a vote of the league’s directors of athletics.
W&J went 6-0 in league play. In Wednesday’s semifinals, W&J will host No. 4 Franciscan (2-3) at 7 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium. Second-seeded Chatham (5-1) will host No. 3 Thiel (4-2).
Men’s golf
Westminster won the PAC team title Saturday, finishing with a score of 306 in Saturday’s final round. The Titans finished the two championship rounds with a team score of 599 (293-306).
The men played their final 18 holes Saturday at Oglebay Resort’s Speidel Golf Club. The opening round was played at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio.
W&J was the runner-up (621, 302-319). Waynesburg finished last (709, 350-359).
W&J senior Garrett Barilar earned PAC Player of the Year honors with a two-round total of 147 (72-75). He finished one stroke ahead of the runner-up, Westminster junior Michael Bell, a Peters Township graduate, who shot 148.
Women’s tennis
Second-seeded Franciscan won a pair of doubles matches before earning wins at second, third and fourth singles for a 5-4 win over No. 4 Washington & Jefferson in the PAC tournament championship match Saturday.
Men’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson lost 19-8 to Grove City on Senior Day Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.
Brendan Tribeck finished with a team-high six points and Alex Strain added five points, including three goals.
