1915 – The Federal League folds. Owners of the American and National Leagues buy out half of the owners (Pittsburgh, Newark, Buffalo, and Brooklyn) of the Federal League teams. Phil Ball, owner of the St. Louis Terriers, is allowed to buy the St. Louis Browns of the AL, and Charles Weeghman, owner of the Chicago Whales, buys out the Chicago Cubs of the NL.
1958 – Mike Nixon of Burgettstown is named head coach of the Washington Redskins. Nixon spent the last five seasons as the Redskins’ backfield coach. He replaces Joe Kuharich, who resigned to become Notre Dame’s head coach.
1969 – Pete Maravich sets an NCAA record by making 30 of 31 free throws, and scores 46 points to lead LSU to a 98-89 victory over Georgia.
1970 – Dan Issel scores 40 points and grabs 29 rebounds to lead the Kentucky Colonels to a 116-100 win over the Pittsburgh Condors in an ABA game in Louisville.
1972 – Undefeated and top-ranked UCLA gets 20 points from Keith Wilkes and wins its 50th consecutive basketball game, 89-73, over visiting Pitt. Billy Knight scores a game-high 37 points for the Panthers.
1983 – Jeff Hostetler overcomes an 0-for-10 start by throwing for two second-half touchdowns as West Virginia defeats Kentucky 20-16 in the Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.
1985 – Falls by Joe Rozanc and Jeff Patterson in the final two bouts rally Chartiers-Houston High School to a 31-30 victory over Plum in a non-section match.
2001 – Pitt has five players score in double figures and cruises to a 78-63 victory over Duquesne to improve to 11-1.
2001 – Eric Apodiakos scores a game-high 19 points as Trinity defeats Washington 65-60 in overtime.
2005 – Kevin Pittsnogle scores 25 points and West Virginia upset No. 7 Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.
2006 – California defensive back Donte Valentino is named to the Associated Press Class A All-State high school football first team.
2007 – Zach Rohaley gets a key fall at 220 pounds and Canon-McMillan defeats Kiski, the top-ranked team in Class AAA, 36-27, in Canonsburg. Jimmy Baxter (106), Michael Binni (113) and Logan Macri (126) also win by fall for Canon-McMillan.
2011 – Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst is hired as Pitt’s head football coach.
