1891 – Dr. James Naismith introduces the first game of basketball. Based on 13 rules created by Naismith, the game is tested by 18 students at the School for Christian Workers in Springfield, Massachusetts. Using a soccer ball, two peach baskets and two teams of nine players each, the objective is to throw a round ball into a round basket attached to a balcony 10 feet above the floor.

1947 – The Pittsburgh Steelers play their first postseason game, a 21-0 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Eastern Division playoffs.

1957 – Pitt’s Don Hennon scores a school-record 45 points, on 20-for-42 shooting, as the Panthers beat Duke 87-84 in double overtime.

1981 – Doug Schloerner’s 15-foot jump shot with one second remaining in the seventh overtime gives Cincinnati a 75-73 victory over Bradley. The seven overtimes sets an NCAA record.

1990 – Two years removed from a 115-point season, Rob Brown is traded by the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Hartford Whalers in exchange for winger Scott Young.

1995 – Monessen High School’s Gina Naccarato scores 35 points in the Greyhounds’ 106-12 victory at Jefferson-Morgan to break, by one point, the WPIAL career scoring record of 2,658 points set by Aliquippa’s Carrie Bordas.

1995 – McGuffey’s Scott Ramsey scores 29 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as the Highlanderes edge West Allegheny, 53-51.

1998 — Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman John Banaszak is hired as head football coach at Washington & Jefferson. Banaszak spent the past four seasons as the Presidents’ defensive coordinator.

2005 – Washington linebacker Kyle Winters is named to the Associated Press Class AA all-state first team.

2007 – McKenna Lampe scores 31 points and becomes the sixth West Greene girls basketball player to reach 1,000 career points as the Pioneers defeat Jefferson-Morgan 75-17 in the Section 2-A opener.
