1958 – Alan Ameche’s one-yard touchdown run at 8:15 of overtime gives the Baltimore Colts a 23-17 victory over the New York Giants, the first overtime game in NFL championship.

1963 – Waynesburg repeats as Chartiers-Houston Invitational wrestling tournament champion. All five Raiders who make the finals – Lynn Brewer (88), Craig McClure (112), Ralph Adamson (120), Bob Teagarden (127) and Jim Higgins (145) – win championships.

1965 – Burgettstown native Mike Nixon is fired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers after a 2-12 season.

1966 – Patsy DeBerardinis scores 42 points and Mon Valley Catholic defeats Immaculate Conception 84-49 in the championship game of the Comets’ basketball tournament.

1978 – Emil Paci makes a 20-foot jump shot with 27 seconds remaining to give Carmichaels a 54-53 victory over Waynebsurg in the finals of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.

1985 – Akron Central-Hower defeats Washington 63-51 in the championship game of the Wheeling Basketball Classic. It’s the Little Presidents’ first regular-season loss since Dec. 13, 1983, snapping a 44-game regular-season winning streak.

1987 – Trinity’s Karen Donley matches the school single-game scoring record with 37 points, to go with 19 rebounds, in a 78-71 victory over Erie McDowell in the semifinals of the Mon Valley Catholic tournament.

1986 – Jerome Lane’s 22 points lift No. 14 Pitt to a 79-76 win over No. 11 Kansas in a first- round game of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu.

1989 – Sonny McClain’s three-point basket with eight seconds remaining gives Fort Cherry a 48-47 victory over South Fayette in the championship game of the Rangers’ holiday tournament.

1996 – McGuffey, on the strength of Matt Helicke’s championship at 119 pounds and the Highlanders’ four second-place finishes, wins the team title at the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament at Trinity High School.

1998 – Kristin Polosky has a triple-double of 20 points, 23 rebounds and 10 blocked shots as Mapletown beats Beth-Center 54-46 in the opening round of the B-C girls basketball tournament.

2003 – Jamal Lewis becomes the fifth player in NFL history to run for 2,000 yards in a season. He gained 114 yards on 27 carries in Baltimore’s 13-10 overtime victory against Pittsburgh, finishing the year with 2,066 yards – second-most in NFL history.

2008 – The Cleveland Browns lose to Pittsburgh 31-0, setting an NFL record by failing to score a touchdown for six straight games.

2011 – Trinity’s Avery King makes a three-point field goal as time expreies to give Trinity a 45-42 victory over Canon-McMillan.
