Women’s basketball

Grove City, sparked by a 9-0 run to end the first half, went on to defeat visiting Waynesburg 67-51 Wednesday night in the PAC opener for both teams.

Grove City led 14-10 after one quarter, then outscored Waynesburg 17-7 in the second period to open a double-digit lead.

Waynesburg hurt its chances by committing 26 turnovers and making only 12 of 21 free throws.

Andrea Orlosky led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Abigail Green had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Marley Wolf scored 11 points. Waynesburg played without Brooke Fuller, its leading returning scorer and rebounder.

Jess Bowen paced Grove City with 14 points.

Archer rejoins Rays

Two-time All-Star pitcher Chris Archer has agreed to rejoin the Tampa Bay Rays on a $6.5 million, one-year contract.

The 32-year-old right-hander, an All-Star with the Rays in 2015 and 2017, is expected to get an opportunity to compete for a spot in a starting rotation that lost Charlie Morton and 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell this winter.

The AL champion Rays declined a $15 million option on Morton for 2021. Snell was traded to the San Diego Padres.

Archer went 54-68 with a 3.69 ERA in seven seasons with the Rays, who traded him to Pittsburgh in a fruitful deal that brought them right-hander Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Austin Meadows in July 2018.

Archer missed the pandemic-shortened 2020 season after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery. He was 6-12 with a 4.92 ERA over two seasons with the Pirates, who declined an $11 million option on his contract for 2021.

NCAA cancels D-III championships

The NCAA is moving Division I women’s championship events in volleyball, ice hockey and bowling to single sites. The changes to the format are in response to directives to have as few preliminary-round sites as possible.

The NCAA also announced that Division III winter championships have been canceled because of low participation numbers among member schools.

All 48 teams in the volleyball tournament will play at the CHI Health Center Arena and Convention Center in Omaha, Neb., beginning April 13. Semifinal matches will be April 22 and the championship match April 24.

The 16-team National Collegiate Bowling Championship will be held at AMF Pro Bowl Lanes in Kansas City, Missouri, from April 7-10.

The eight-team hockey tournament will be held at the Erie Insurance Arena beginning March 15. The semifinals will be March 19 and the final March 21.

In the NHL

Alex Killorn had a goal and an assist, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 Wednesday for their third consecutive win.

Victor Hedman, Ryan McDonagh, Anthony Cirelli and Brayden Point also scored for Tampa Bay, which remained unbeaten in five home games this season. Blake Coleman had two assists to reach 100 career points, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 16 stops.

In the NBA

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists despite sitting out the fourth quarter, and the Milwaukee Bucks routed the Indiana Pacers 130-110 on Wednesday night.
