1956 – Monessen High School clinches the Section 5 basketball title by defeating second-place Charleroi 56-43. Bob Hewitt scores 18 points for the Greyhounds, who extended their section winning streak to 33 games.
1959 – Woody Gordon scores 18 points and Washington wins its 10th consecutive basketball section title by beating Canonsburg, 69-60.
1970 – Mapletown takes over sole possession of first place in Section 20-B by defeating visiting Waynesburg, 59-45, before a sellout crowd. Bob Clites scores 25 points for the Maples.
1971 – Washington & Jefferson stays in the hunt for the Presidents Conference title and avenges an earlier loss by winning 67-63 in overtime at John Carroll. Scott Herz leads W&J with 22 points and Rich Relich has 11.
1972 – Rich Pocock signs a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming the first Washington & Jefferson College player since Deacon Dan Towler in 1950 to sign with an NFL team. Pocock was W&J’s leading rusher in each of his four seasons with the Presidents.
1975 – In a game marred by three scuffles and two ejections, Waynesburg College’s basketball team defeats visiting California State 88-77 at College Gym. Kevin Bealko scores 27 points for Waynesburg and Delmar Beshore leads Cal with 26.
1976 – Washington improves its basketball record to 19-1 and wins the Section 14-AA title with an 87-48 thumping of Beth-Center. Greg Grace scores 20 points for the Prexies.
1981 – Mon Valley Catholic wins its first WPIAL boys basketball section championship by defeating visiting Frazier 68-65. Sam Perry leads the Spartans with 18 points.
1981 – Washington wins the Section 9-AA-A title with a 70-66 win over Burgettstown. Kevin Anderson leads the way with 20 points.
1984 – Mon Valley Catholic’s Jim Wunderlich scores 12 points in the first half, Tim Kostolansky adds 14 in the second half, and the Spartans win the Section 19-A title with a 58-56 victory over host Geibel. Dean Gilmore makes two free throws with 34 seconds left for the winning margin.
1986 – Immaculate Conception wins its first WPIAL girls basketball section title with an 88-32 rout of Burgettstown to capture the 17-AA-A championship. Kim Spencer leads the Comettes with 19 points. It’s the 14th straight win for IC.
1987 – Mario Bongiorni scores 35 points and Vince Eannace has 20 as Burgettstown wins the Section 17-AA-A basketball title with an 80-68 win over Fort Cherry.
1989 – Waynesburg routs Keystone Oaks 44-8 in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament, giving Raiders head coach Joe Ayersman his 200th career victory.
1990 – Trinity avenges a regular-season loss to McGuffey by defeating the Highlanders 38-26 in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament at Chartiers Valley.
1993 – Ray Gutierrez scores 28 points and California University clinches its third straight PSAC West Division title with an 83-74 victory over Shippensburg.
1996 – It’s a sweep for Washington County at the WPIAL Wrestling Team Tournament finals. Wash High wins the Class AA title with a 31-21 victory over West Greene, and McGuffey ends a run of second-place finishes by winning the Class AAA championship, 39-24, over Canon-McMillan.
2001 – Arnold Palmer, 71, becomes the first player to shoot his age in a PGA Tour event since Sam Snead did 22 years ago. Palmer finishes the fourth round of the Bob Hope Classic with a 1-under 71.
2007 – Shea Georgetti scores 19 of his 20 points in the first half as Avella upsets Duquesne 47-44 in the WPIAL Class A boys basketball playoffs at Trinity High School. It’s the final basketball game in Duquesne High School history.
2007 – Chartiers-Houston’s Luke Miller (215 pounds), Washington’s Alex Evans (160) and West Greene’s Kory Bissett (140) each win their third section titles at the 1-AA wrestling tournament held in Houston.
2011 – McGuffey’s John Hupp wins the WPIAL Individual Rifle Championships, besting a field of 56 shooters. Avella’s Sylvia Dreistadt is the runner-up and defending champion Chelsea Fonner of Trinity is fourth.
