Steelers’

Tomlin dealing with COVID-19

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is dealing with COVID-19.

Tomlin said Monday that he’s experienced “minimal symptoms” and remains in “good health.”

The 48-year-old Tomlin did not disclose when he tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The team sent employees and staff home last Wednesday as a precaution after someone in the facility tested positive.

Tomlin said he expects to be back in the office “soon” and will continue to work virtually until he is cleared to go back to work in-person.

The Steelers are in the midst of a busy offseason and are still working to determine how quarterback Ben Roethlisberger fits into their 2021 plans.

Players of the week

Waynesburg University freshman Jansen Knotts put together two outstanding performances for the Yellow Jacket and was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.

Knotts averaged 15.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in victories over Franciscan and Bethany. In Wednesday’s 90-71 win at Franciscan, he finished with a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double, the first of his collegiate career. Knotts’ 16 rebounds against the Barons are the second-most in the PAC this season. He followed that with 16 points and nine rebounds Saturday in a 68-43 home victory over Bethany.

  • Washington & Jefferson freshman Nathan Smith was tabbed as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week.

Smith swam a 56.40 in the 100-yard backstroke in his collegiate debut. His effort was the third-fastest mark in the conference for the 2020-21 season. He also logged the seventh-fastest time in the 200 backstroke at 2:09.84.

In the NBA

For the 10th time in the past 15 years, the Minnesota Timberwolves have a new head coach.

Toronto assistant Chris Finch was introduced Monday as the replacement for Ryan Saunders, who was fired the night before with the team carrying the NBA’s worst record.

Finch has 24 years of coaching experience, roughly half of that in Europe. The two-time NCAA Division III All-American at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania played for the Sheffield Sharks in the British Basketball League and later coached the same team from 1997-2003. Finch also coached Britain’s national team in the 2012 Olympics.

In college basketball

Freshman DJ Steward scored 21 points with seven assists, classmate Mark Williams set season highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double, and Duke eased past Syracuse 85-71 on Monday night for a season best four-game winning streak.

The Blue Devils shot 61.3% in the first half, including 10 of 18 from distance, and scored a season-high 52 points with Steward, Jeremy Roach and Matthew Hurt each reaching double figures.

In the NHL

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored a tiebreaking power-play goal in the third period and Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves, leading the New York Islanders to a 3-2 win over the last-place Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Pageau got his seventh goal at 15:08 when he banged in a rebound on the backhand after Oliver Wahlstrom’s initial shot with stopped by Buffalo goaltender Linus Ullmark.

Aaron Ekblad and Keith Yandle scored, Chris Driedger made 24 saves and the Florida Panthers beat the slumping, rusty Dallas Stars, 3-1.
