1937 – A field goal by Ted Williams in overtime gives Washington & Jefferson a 42-41 college basketball victory over host West Virginia.
1956 – John Bozick’s two baskets in the final minute give Centerville High School a 54-51 victory over Mapletown in the Section 18 basketball tiebreaker game played in the new Jefferson-Morgan gymnasium. Bozick scores a game-high 18 points for the Wildcats.
1959 – Trailing by 11 points late in the third quarter, Washington rallies and defeats Har-Brack 48-46 in the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals at the Pitt Field House.Don Ferrell scores 24 points for Washington.
1970 – Frank Griffey scores 15 of his points in the second half and John Radic has 17 points as Ringgold beats Montour, 69-61, in a WPIAL Class A basketball playoff game before 8,500 at the Civic Arena.
1978 – Delmer Beshore scores 36 points in California State College’s 92-76 victory over Edinboro and becomes the Vulcans’ all-time leading scorer with 1,763 points. Beshore breaks the 19-yard-old record of Roger Hotz.
1980 – The United States hockey team wins the gold medal with a 4-2 victory over Finland at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.
1982 – Greg Jones scores 22 points as West Virginia extends its winning streak to 23 games with an 82-77 victory over visiting Pitt.
1984 – With no time remaining on the clock, Carmichaels’ J.L. Lechner makes two free throws to give the Mikes a 63-62 win over Shannock Valley in a WPIAL Class A first round basketball playoff game.
1984 – Playing with a sprained ankle, Trinity’s Tim O’Connor scores 14 points and grabs 10 rebounds to lead the Hillers to a 61-57 victory over Mt. Lebanon in the WPIAL Class AAAA basketball playoffs.
1987 – Jennifer Famularo makes two free throws with 42 seconds left to give Trinity a 57-56 victory over Connellsville in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA girls basketball playoffs at California High School. The Hillers win by erasing an eight-point deficit in the final 6:40.
1986 – Los Angeles forges a 4-0 lead in the first period, but the Pittsburgh Penguins charge back and beat the Kings, 6-5, on Doug Shedden’s overtime goal. It is the Penguins’ first overtime victory.
1994 – Bentleyville native Ron Bertovich resigns after eight years as commissioner of the Atlantic 10.
2005 – Brandon Studer scores 24 points to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 69-57 win over Grove City in the PAC basketball tournament semifinals. It’s W&J’s first win at Grove City in 11 years.
2007 – Kory Bissett of West Greene wins his third WPIAL Class AA wrestling championship by decisioning Burrell’s Devon Maloney 2-1 in overtime in the 140-pound final.
2011 – Monessen routs Ellwood City 61-38 in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA boys basketball playoffs, giving Greyhounds coach Joe Salvino his 500th career victory.
2011 – Lamar Patterson scores the first five points of the second half, sparking a decisive run that leads fourth-ranked Pitt to a 71-58 win over West Virginia. Brad Wanamaker has 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Panthers.
