1923 – John W. Heisman, former coach at Pennsylvania and Georgia Tech, is hired as football coach at Washington & Jefferson.
1969 — Arizona State’s Frank Kush is named the head football coach at Pitt. Five days later, Kush backs out of the deal and returns to Arizona State.
1970 – Kansas City’s defense, highlighted by four interceptions, three in the final quarter, carries the Chiefs to a 17-7 victory over Oakland Raiders in the last AFL title game.
1973 – Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Joe Greene is named NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press.
1976 – The Pittsburgh Steelers survive 15-degree temperatures and eight turnovers to defeat the Oakland Raiders 16-10 in the AFC championship game at ice-covered Three Rivers Stadium.
1982 – Avella native Gary Tranquill is named head football coach at the Naval Academy. Tranquill spent the last three years as an assistant coach at West Virginia.
1985 – Tim O’Connor has 19 points in Trinity’s 71-46 victory over McGuffey and becomes the first player in Hillers history to score 1,000 career points.
1986 – Mario Lemieux scores a goal and assists on two others as the Pittsburgh Penguins play to a 3-3 tie with the Moscow Dynamo before a sellout crowd at the Civic Arena.
1989 – Sophomore guard Sean Miller scores 22 points and Pitt upsets second-ranked Syracuse 81-76 at the Carrier Dome.
1989 – Mario Lemieux scores one goal and assists on two others as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Soviet Central Red Army team 4-2 in an exhibition game at the Civic Arena.
1991 – Mike Cook scores three of his game-high 23 points in the third overtime and Waynesburg outlasts Thomas Jefferson 54-53 in a Section 9-AAA basketball game. Neither team scores in the first overtime and each tallies two points in the second overtime.
1999 – Sarah Kapis’ steal and layup with one second remaining gives Chartiers-Houston a 48-46 win over visiting Washington in a Section 4-AA girls basketball game.
