1950 – Lee Sala, a middleweight boxer from Donora, knocks out Sammy Secreet of Cecil in the first round of the main event at Cuscaden Park in Tampa, Fla.
1959 – Jim Chacko scores a school-record 50 points on 12 field goals and 26 of 32 at the free-throw line as Charleroi routs Bellmar, 82-35.
1969 – Chuck Noll, an assistant coach for the Baltimore Colts, is hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
1970 – Trinity’s wrestlers defeat host Waynesburg 36-11 before 1,500, the largest crowd to watch a sporting event at the new high school. Trinity’s Bill Larking (133) and John Chatman (154) remain undefeated by earning decision victories.
1970 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select Louisiana Tech quarterback Terry Bradshaw with the first pick in the NFL draft.
1973 – UCLA, led by Bill Walton, sets an NCAA record for consecutive victories with its 61st, an 82-63 victory over Notre Dame. UCLA breaks the record of 60 set by San Francisco in 1956. Walton scores 16 points, grabs 15 rebounds and blocks 10 shots.
1982 – Christy Jones scores a game-high 23 points in Bentworth’s 56-25 girls basketball victory over Avella to become the Bearcats’ all-time scoring leader with 1,093 points, surpassing Michelle Forte’s total of 1,083.
1984 – Peters Township’s Adam Sarson scores 16 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and grabs 15 rebounds in the Indians’ 64-53 win over visiting Seton-La Salle.
1986 – Waynesburg College’s basketball team cracks the NAIA top 20 for the first time. The Yellow Jackets, with a 16-1 record under head coach Rudy Marisa, are ranked No. 19.
1988 – Rob Montgomery scores 26 points, Harold Hamlin has 23 and Waynesburg College routs Point Park 116-70 for the Yellow Jackets’ school-record 20th consecutive victory and 46th straight at home.
2010 – Canon-McMillan wins its 31 section wrestling championship by defeating West Allegheny 48-19 and Mt. lebanon 54-15 in the Section 5-AAA team tournament.
2011 – Canon-McMillan wins its 10th consecutive section wrestling championship, beating Waynesburg 54-18 in the final of the 4-AAA team tournament.
