1943 – Waynesburg College’s wrestling team has its 30-match winning streak end with a 12-12 tie against visiting Purdue.
1959 – Vince Lombardi, assistant coach of the New York Giants, is hired as head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers.
1969 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select defensive tackle Joe Greene from North Texas State with the fourth pick in the NFL draft.
1969 – Michael Caldwell scores 25 points and Pitt beats West Virginia 90-87. It’s the Panthers’ first win over WVU coach Bucky Waters.
1981 – Peters Township wins the final three bouts, including two on falls by Rick Rudek and Doug Mikec, to score its biggest wrestling win, a 29-26 victory over Trinity.
1983 – Tony Ellis scores 20 points and leads a second-half charge as Washington High School’s boys basketball team moves into a tie for the Section 10-AA-A lead with Bentworth by defeating the Bearcats 61-43.
1985 – Lisa Burt sets the McGuffey girls single-game scoring record with 45 points in the Highlanders’ 63-45 victory at Frazier. Burt makes 19 of 31 shots from the field.
1988 – Waynesburg College wins its 20th consecutive men’s basketball game, 116-70 over visiting Point Park.
1989 – Adrian Townsend’s 17-foot jump shot with one second remaining caps a comeback by California University as the Vulcans defeat Indiana 73-71 at Hamer Hall. Cal trailed by 16 points in the first half and by five points with 1:13 left.
1990 – The San Francisco 49ers beat the Denver Broncos 55-10 in the most lopsided Super Bowl. The 49ers are the first repeat NFL champion in a decade and tie the Pittsburgh Steelers with four Super Bowl wins.
1991 – Sophomore guard Anne Malkowiak, making her first collegiate start, scores a career-high 29 points as the California University women’s basketball team defeats Saint Vincent, 95-82.
2011 – Nate Bellhy has a triple-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as Fort Cherry defeats Carlynton 59-56 in Section 5-AA.
